What's up with the FQ Batman's sneering, pursed lips in that first panel?  It looks ghastly.

I've made that face that Robin is making on that page. I was on the toilet, constipated. That moment had more gandeur than this entire page.

We get it. Quitely sucks. Don't you guys need to go start another thread to slam Alan Moore now. It's been awhile.

I'm still trying to figure out what's lacking in grandeur in the above image.  Batman's hanging back, striking an ominous pose as the bat-signal shines behind him, while the young, reckless Robin is barreling toward the ground at full-speed, ready to do some serious damage to whomever is in his way.

And All-Star Superman wasn't just a critical success, but a commercial one, as well.  It's not JB's Superman, sure, but it wasn't *just* fans or *just* critics who dug it.  Quitely has a more "European" style than we're used to seeing in American superhero comics, but I wouldn't say that he's miscast when he draws them.  I enjoyed it when Moebius drew the Silver Surfer, and it's fun seeing artists like Eduardo Risso and Jordi Bernet tackle DC's superheroes, too.  These characters have been around for 70 years, and it's good to see something outside of the ordinary every now and again.

It's a thread about grandeur in comic books, or lack thereof.  Some think Quitely falls in the latter category.  No one's saying you can't argue for the quality of Quitely's work, if that's what you wish.

Looks a bit stiff to me.  Besides that, the coloring is a bit too "candy" for me.  And Robin's face looks odd, as it does in the previous panel.  I don't know if these mean lack of grandeur but they do suggest their own problems.

Well, I actually have liked the coloring on All Star Superman and Batman and Robin.  Seems as if they actually are closer to the brighter colors of the 60s than the more washed out and muted 2000s.  I think the brighter coloring is one of the reasons I have enjoyed Quitely's work on the aforementioned titles.

With all the advances in coloring tech, it's been very depressing to see all the muddy brown colors staring back at me from the comics shelf.  Definitely need to bring back color, especially to covers.

And word balloons!

Comics should look like comics!

Well, I'm no comic book artist, but all I see is a duder on a hang-glider and a petulant kid on the other. What this does for me, if I was a criminal of Gotham, is make me completely unafraid of Batman and Robin. I mean, the worst thing that could happen is to receive a beating from these two trick-or-treaters.

I mean, THAT is Robin??? I mean, I know Robin has never been the most "manly" hero because, well, he's a teenager and all, but just look at that twerp of Quietly's.

Now, in this panel, you see Robin as a scared late teen, but you could also see yourself having trouble with this obviously athletic little guy.:

Oh, and note the wicked dynamics as Adams trusts the reader to perceive the threat even though the weapon is behind the attacker. Just by body placement, and an understanding of significance of the symbol, you understand what's going on

THIS Robin is 10 years old. I'm not a big Quitely fan, but that DOES look like a 10 year old boy with a bad attitude which is exactly what this Robin is.
