Some of you may not know this, but Keith and I were up for the regular penciling gig on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN at the same time. ____________________
I certainly didn't know that. I wonder what happened with him, it's like he stopped drawing comics all of a sudden...

That's, unfortunately, exactly what happened.

What does everyone think of Gary Frank's Superman work?

I don't know how his action scenes look, Andrew, but the shots posted on this thread are pretty appealing. Frank does about as close to a Christopher Reeve likeness as you're ever going to see. Now, I can easily understand objections to this if you feel that the comics shouldn't be taking their cues from the movies, but in this case it works for me.

That's the model for fight scenes right there as far as I'm concerned. You can maybe play a little more with varrying panel sizes but the narrative thread of the sequence is untouchable. I really wish more artists would take their cue from this. And Stan almost...ALMOST... did the right thing here. He couldn't quite keep his fingers out of the pie entirely, but at least he didn't pull the same gaff he pulled in another one of Jack's fight scenes, where he has Cap saying something like "And now someone's gonna get taught a lesson... OOF! And I guess that someone is me!" in a panel that Jack clearly intended to portray Cap kicking his opponent. Stan didn't pick up on that and read it as Cap taking a punch. That was an embarrassing one. Felt like they were going out of their way to make Captain America look like a goof. One of the drawbacks of the Marvel Method. Roy Thomas sometimes misread the art on the page as well, and slapped on contradictory dialogue accordingly.

Can't go with you on this one though, Nathan. I don't see anything wrong with this image at all. Looks pretty exciting to me.

They look like they're fighting in slow motion... in the vacuum of space.
(Plus, it looks like Superman just tried to slap Bizarro!)

Is that a flood behind them? I liked how this issue maintained a Strangelove-esque hysterical tone.

Looks too "posed" to me. And I've never seen Bizarro depicted as an old man before.

There are such things as buffed old men, though in that picture, the effect is perhaps more...lumpy, like he's wearing a padded suit. Whatever the case, he still seems old.

He looks like he's deteriorating (which, as established by John Byrne, he is) and you can't see his teeth but he still looks powerful. And saying "I've never seen Bizzarro depicted as X before" is pretty meaningless considering he's been drawn amillion different ways over the years, JB's version being a good example. Even that point's somewhat moot since this is an All-Star book and thus outside of continuity. Who knows what physical attributes this particular clone has? He really doesn't have to look anything like previous versions of the character (though he's pretty close). Seems to be taking a thematic cue from JB to me.
And it doesn't really look posed to me. Looks like they were caught in the middle of the action.

I agree with Paulo. I think he looks like a big, soft, lumpy old man.
