I was curious myself what ish the Mera sequence is from? It might be a BRAVE AND THE BOLD issue...the scan was found a while back in some unusual place online.

But look at the clear, pure Aparo action: Thug 1 disarmed by right hand chop. Mera delivers the reverse left-hand blow to Thug 2 behind her. Mera keeps turning naturally toward Thug 2 to land the right-hand knock-out. Meanwhile, Thug 1 has retrieved his weapon behind Mera and is charging. However, Thug 1 is disarmed again with a second chop. Grasping that same arm, Mera judo-flips Thug 1.

Five clear, sparklingly exciting moves. Flowing action.

Good contrast there Nathan!  The Red Hulk looks like he's tapping Thor with his knuckles like how you would casually knock on a door.

I can't get over how huge that Red Hulk's arms and hands are compared to his tiny head.  I'm all for exaggeration but that's just ... odd.

Interesting to note that even when he drew the Hulk "larger than life" for effect, as on this cover, Kirby still kept him "in proportion.

Arc and Chad:  Based on the art style, I'd guess the Aparo page is from late-60's Aquaman, during the Skeates/Aparo run on the book which I'm always yammering about.  I've only read a few issues from the run, and they are all great and the run needs to be reprinted, preferably in color though I'll take the Showcase when it comes if I have to.  Aparo's art changed gradually over his career... in his earliest stuff, he tended to draw wider jaws and broader figures.  By the time he was assigned Brave and Bold everything had narrowed a bit.

A couple of thoughts from going through this thread just now.

Things seem to boil down to
1) Full script - I was thinking about this the other day. As a writer, I wouldn't presume to tell the artist how to construct the art. What I would like to do would be to let them know what I wanted to convey to the reader. Beyond that, go wild (I think here of JB's famous Iron Man plot to JRJR - they fight, go wild (Or something to that effect)).
2) Lack of motion (Maybe this should be photo realism) - artists are more concerned with showing that they can draw detail. Why is this? Does detail serve the story or show everyone what a great artist we are observing? They therefore get lost in this and move to placing motionless characters in front of detailed backgrounds which hightens the need to make them look 'realistic'.
3) Just plain poor artwork - I have yet to see anything by (say) Ed MGuiness (sp?) that looks anything like in proportion. His Red Hulk is beyond ridiculous - three feet wide arms and a pin head. How is this guy seen as a good artist? Again, if there was dynamism in the art I could see it, but there isn't, it's just static people.
4) Plain lack of imagination - There seems to be a complete lack of an ability to think outside the box. Let's get a photo reference. If I can't do that, let's copy what someone else has already done.
5) People working on what they are not suited to do - Frank Quitly and the pages from We3 show this spectacularly. His poor renditions of Superman add to this.

Just my two peneth worth.
