Morrison felt Beast should look like the Beast from Beauty and the Beast because his code name is "Beast".

----

Ick. I suppose I should be glad that he didn't give Cyclops one eye, or give the White Queen a monarchy to rule.

"nothing to tell you what the story is about or why you should read it"
-----
What are you talking about? It's right there at the top of the cover. There's a
RIOT at Xavier's! That's probably exciting, right? That's probably what those
guys on the cover are standing around talking about.

If your story is about a riot at Xavier's, what else could you possibly show on
the cover other than people discussing that very riot?

That Jim Lee Superman cover is pretty sweet, in my opinion. I like the way
the characters look, and there seems to be a story there.

Of the Image guys, Jim Lee is probably the one I appreciate the most. I think
his artwork has matured a lot since the early 1990's, and I wish he were a
bit more prolific.

"Wolverine with no discernible hairdo or mutton chops, with a tuft of hair on his chin that screams "douchebag"?"

++++++++

I think that was the look Ultimate Wolverine was sporting at the time. I always wondered if someone at Marvel told him to draw Wolverine that way or if he drew the Ultimate version because he didn't know any better.

Vinny, Morrison gave Emma frost diamond powers because of her name. His crazy logic was that a characters powers should reflect their codename and vise versa.

So how does Emma Frost translate into diamond powers?? (Shouldn't she
have Iceman's powers.) Actually, Frost isn't even her codename, is it???

Crazy logic indeed. Morrison really ruined the X-MEN in his run.

Hey, even if Buscema hated dawing superheroes with a passion, that's a-ok with me, as long as it never showed in his work.

I would very much appreciate it if people would stop posting images of Morrison's (and Quietly's) run. It's been about a decade and I STILL haven't recovered from this bullshit. Words can't possibly describe how much I hate this period. And this cover is a good representation of what was wrong with it. Jean looks like a schoolgirl when she should be a teacher/super hero/semi-goddess. Wolverine looks like a teenager. The Beast, horribly drawn and remodeled, is showing us his back! The costumes are awful, the logo stupid and don't let me get started on the destruction of Cyclops, Xavier and Magneto in the stories. Nightmare is the best I can use to describe this mess (add a list of annoying, unappealing and, imo, less than skillful artists in the mix, like Quietly, Cordey and Van Schiver and I am about to get sick).
I tried Morrison again, a couple of times after that. Unfortunately, his style is annoynin on so many levels. Quietly's work doesn't help either. He can draw, but I don't like what I see. I honestly tried to like All Star Superman, mainly due to the praise by some people in here, but it failed to geain my respect. I don't care that it tried to be a tribune to the old Superman stories. I think that was a pretense. What it showed us was a very uncharacteristic, almost fat guy in a Superman like suit. It emanated  sort of sickness and disgust.
On the other hand, while Cassaday or Hitch are also caught in the same web as Quietly, I have to say I like their art better. I think Cassaday was amazing in Astonishing and Hitch would be the last person I would blame for the failings of Ultimates or the current FF.
John Buscema's work was respectful of the genre. I have no idea if he did it just for the money, but that says more about his professionlism than I can think of.
Jim Lee was indeed one of the "good" Image guys, I think along with Marc Silvestri and Dale Keown. They were more than a little talented and they produced quality work.

You know, I've looked at that X-Men cover a couple of times now, each time thinking, 'Jean Grey isn't even there, what are they all on about - it's the White Queen'

I've just looked again. Silly me, you're all talking about the person that looks like an off model Kitty aren't you. I hated that run of comics.

I think a comparison to a MAD cover seems a bit of a stretch.
