• Get rid of all the other speedsters, the ones who de-unique him. Make
him special again
Agreed. (Except for Jay Garrick. Don't get rid of Jay Garrick!)

The fact that Wally is quoting the Pied Piper is disturbing in itself,
because it signals in my mind that Wally "lives" with the Rogues...

Agreed on most of what you said, on this point though, you're over-reading. At the time that mini came out, Piper had reformed in the main Flash series and had been using his science to help Wally. Later events forced him to become an outlaw again, which makes for an interesting dynamic between he and Wally.

Jay isn't really a problem in the same way, since he's been portrayed since his return years ago as in semi-retirement. Even in JSA he's mostly a mentor figure to the younger legacy heroes.
We were actually doing okay on speedsters since Johnny Quick and Max Mercury and Bart got offed, and Jesse became Liberty Belle instead of Jesse Quick. Then Johns decided to bring back Bart, and they left Wally around.
Wally is the real problem now. They've pretty much said in interviews that Wally was never supposed to come back. His series had a pretty good throughline. He started out as an immature punk kid with a chip on his shoulder and over the course of the series grew up, fell in love, got married, and settled down with his wife and kids. Nicely done...
But then they decided at the last minute, after killing Bart, that if they were going to bring Barry back it had to be a 'Big Event'. So they literally brought back Wally and the kids as 'filler' until Final Crisis. So we got about a year worth of lousy Flash comics, Wally's happy ending ruined, and a character that I don't think anybody knows what to do with.
I think Johns thought that since he had had so much success differentiating the GL Corps characters who all have the same powers, that he could do the same with speedsters. Its a very different thing though.

Hey, let's not forget that Barry made friends with Heat Wave. Both Heat Wave and the Piper had to reform first, of course.

Well, I look at it this way: Geoff Johns did an interview on CBR talking about how the Flash is his favorite character. He meant the Wally West Flash. He grew up (young punk) with Wally as the Flash.
What I think will happen is Johns pretty quickly leaves this title, maybe as soon as this mini-series is over. Johns will do enough for a trade and leave the book in other hands.
That's what I'm hoping, not neccessarily because Johns stinks, but I think he's not on target.
And for god's sake, will somebody put a decent penciller on THE FLASH? I haven't seen an artist I really liked on that books since...what? I liked Butch Guice.

Well, it looks like Johns is focused on the "Flash family" and Hal Jordan "for the immediate future" through BLACKEST NIGHT.
I guess Johns won't really mess up Barry Allen too badly. Barry's alive, so I that's worth while.

I agree. Flash should have a simple style to me. He has a simple, yet great costume. He should be thin, not bulky, like a runner. Duh. I think The Flash should be drawn almost like an animated style, or something similar.

"Need" has nothing to do with it. But if it happens, why is that such a horrible thing? Why does "preserving the character for future audiences" have to mean "ongoing monthly title?" Thanks to Showcase, readers of today get to experience the very stories that made Barry popular in the first place. How is that not preservation? King Arthur and Robin Hood not having truly new stories in a few hundred years hasn't stopped new generations from being exposed to them.
Every long running character (at least as far as superheroes are concerned) has gone through various changes in the name of "keeping them vital." Some are subtle and some are major. (Which is which tends to depend on your perspective, with people being the most open-minded about changes that occured before they started reading or the first few years in. After that, you tend to get more locked into how the way things Should Be. Same with the whole question of what's a barnacle vs. what's a vital part of the series. But I digress.)
Ending a character's story does far more to preserve them for future generations because they're allowed to stay as they are, rather than be drastically altered (either instantly or over a period of time) in the name of revitalization and maintaining reader interest in the series.

Well, the good news is that there's no way Sciver is fast enough for a monthly, so there's bound to be an artist switch with the ongoing.

Well, who knows what will become of it, but in a recent Word Balloon interview Van Sciver said he was tired of being a cover artist, pin-up guy and was buckling down and trying to become a book a month artist.
