Namor 17 because it both revealed and concealed the twist of Who is
Iron Fist? Beautifully done, and added a lot to my enjoyment of the
issue (I don't think I knew who the Super-Skrull was before that comic,
I know I hadn't read a story with him in it but JB made him into a huge
badass, and a big deal in the course of that story. Other writers seem
to treat him as either an afterthought or a moron for some reason).

As far as I can tell the "Super Skrull is a punk" meme started with Peter David's Hulk. When the Hulk is fighting the Super Skrull he calls him a loser and talks about all the times he's lost when fighting the FF, Spider-Man, whoever. Which kinda makes sense that the grey Hulk would say something like that, but it does a huge disservice to the character. Every villain in comics is a loser if you look at it like that. Galactus keeps losing. Doctor Doom keeps losing. It's the nature of the genre.
Anyway, after that you started seeing the Super Skrull treated as a loser and a perpetual punching bag for the heroes instead of a powerful evil invader that the heroes were just barely able to defeat.

Oh, snap. I always forget about that DAREDEVIL #200 cover. Probably because I wasn't into DD as much as I was into Spider-Man and FF. Great cover even if not my favorite!

We've all read about a billion of these things and we are just so filled
with boredom and ennui that we have to mock the characters
every chance we get.

I always considered the Super Skrull a formidable foe. A Skrull with the powers of the Fantastic Four?! When I was a kid, and saw him in MTU, I figured he was a threat. Hell, even NOW, as a 36 year old man, I think he's a badass.
Guess I just don't "get" the new way of writing.

Read more as a character bit. Like Bill pointed out, it made sense for the Grey Hulk to do that. Seems more an example of other writers not taking into account WHO is saying it and just treating it like a revelation about the SS.

I do have to mention this cover as a severely close runner up. A bit more "Classic" as well:
Without even the faintest hint of red vampire eyes, Superman comes off somewhat menacing and yet regal at the same time. It's an "uh oh" moment for the enemy while proudly displaying THE most iconic aspect of the character, the shield.
Why isn't this technique used more to indicate Superman's badassery?

I never saw the villains losing as making them look bad; I saw it as making the heroes look GOOD.

I had a subscription to Daredevil as a kid. I remember standing by the mailbox pulling DD #200 out of the brown paper sleeve and being blown away.

Honestly, the first 12 AF covers are JB's best cover run (in my opinion)! There is so much variety -- each is unique and fun -- each feature a great eye catching design -- they're just awesome! (Even JB's favorite cover is part of this run!)
