From where I sit, he answered a direct challenge …

••

"Let's see you do better" is not an answer to a challenge. Demonstrating
that the challenge is unfounded, or has already been met, or is being met, is
answering.

Brevoort should not have made his response to JB on the official Marble website. JB didn't go there with his 'challenge'. This is John Byrne's own website and can he can say anything he wants to, if anyone wants to respond they can respond HERE.
Not only that, but he didn't even really address the points JB made as constructive criticism. He should have said "Thank you for your valuable insight, we'll take your comments into consideration."
Marble KNOWS that John Byrne sells comics, (They continue to print TPBs of all of his work) maybe a smart publishing company would follow advice from an accomplished creator who has ALREADY proven that he knows how to do it right, and work on those suggestions.

Brevoort's snarky attitude DID come across as Wrestling (Lowlife) lingo. Unprofessional.

I'd completely agree than the current Amazing Spider-Man is a good fit for
JB's challenge.

••

Let's assume this to be true. How many titles does Marvel publish in a given
month?

… JB would be Theoden…

••

You realize that works only if my opinions on this matter are entirely
informed by those of Joe Zhang.

If you're going to play this game, you should make an effort to understand
how it works.

After MARVEL COMICS went bankrupt. It was out of business for maybe thiry seconds, but in that time everything changed. (Now I call it Marble)
Everything changes, I can understand that.
Now I'm waiting for it to change BACK.

FYI the only monthly Marble book I collect is SPIDER-GIRL.
Which is being cancelled thankyouverymuch.

Joe, the fact that you can't clarify your vague comments when politely asked to do so leads me to think that you don't have a clue what you're talking about. In my eyes, you're just making yourself look silly, which is a shame.

JB, getting back to the original challenge, and specifically the "writing for the trade" concept. Personally I can see both sides of the argument - stretching a storyline out purely to fit into the "six-issues-makes-a-trade" template doesn't make for a good monthly comic, but equally many readers now prefer to read their comics in trade format, and I've always believed a trade works much better if it contains a complete story (so that essentially it's a graphic novel, albeit using reprinted material). So how do you feel about titles which aren't actually an ongoing series, but appear as a regular series of mini-series, which can then be collected into handy trades? Assuming the "writing for the trade" concept won't be going away anytime soon, just for the sake of this exercise if nothing else, would you see a series of mini-series as a decent middle ground, almost a win-win situation?

Yes, "writing for the trade" is a huge success, isn't it? Look at the current
sales compare to, say, 1975.

Oh, wait. . .

Seriously -- does it really take a math genius to realize that "writing for the
trade" impacts the sales of the monthlies, and if those sales drop enough
there won't be any trades?

"you're just making yourself look silly"

But I look like Arwen.

(Yeah, that's an invitation for some waste-of-life to go photoshop.)

Well, JB would be Theoden, but I don't know who Saruman is. Hence my question.

True; sorry, these weird analogies are making my head spin.  Still, not a very flattering one for JB.

*************

No doubt about it, JB - Amazing Spider-Man is the exception to the rule.

But that's my whole point. If you don't care for the standard Marvel fare for the reasons outlined at the beginning of this thread, then Amazing Spider-Man might be more to your liking. If all of Marvel's comics were like the current ASM, I don't think we would be having this discussion.
