"I know it is a longshot but I for one think JB should be back at Marvel and doing his thing."

But JB did. It was called X-Men Hidden Years. And they canned the book and lied and lied about the reasons why. So why should he expect anything different from Joe Quesada and his editors?

"Ok, give me a miniseries with no editorial input whatsoever and I'll show you how it's done."

And they'll interfere with it anyways, market it like spoiled milk. And when the sales are low they'll blame JB. "See, he doesn't know what do to anymore".

This was 10 years ago. Joe Quesada is not the same editor in chief he was then and he himself said he has learned over the last 10 years.

JB can go back and make a great book. I'd like to see a fresh Wolverine story than see JB revisit the Hidden Years.

Why would anyone not want JB to do a new Marvel book?

JB: "By god! I'll show'em! I'll show'em all what a man can do!"

Next day, call to Tom Brevoort: "Hello? John?"

"Yeh. Listen, I know you think I'm full of wild blueberry muffins. So I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and show you punks what's what. Give me MARVEL TEAM-UP."

"Oh...hey, sorry John. We've got, well, plans for MARVEL TEAM-UP. See, well, it's in development with a name...a big name, John."

"Right. What about HULK?"

"Planned out for the next few years."

"All right, what can I work on?"

What about the MARVEL ADVENTURES line?

I don't understand why JB can't work on those books.

MARVEL ADVENTURES? Why doesn't this work, JB? Or is it simply more "..."

 QUOTE:
That's the key; I doubt they're interested in new readers at all.

This drum has been beat to death.

Solicits for March 2009:

MARVEL ADVENTURES SUPER HEROES #9
MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR #46
MARVEL ADVENTURES SPIDER-MAN #49
MARVEL ADVENTURES THE AVENGERS #34

I wouldn't refer to 138 plus comics, as not being interested.  This doesn't even include the Hulk, and Iron Man series, or the trades.

Later, Marvel did exactly the same thing I'd been originally hired to do, this
time in the form of the ULTIMATE line, and the same "voices" that had been
"heard" complaining about the least misplaced comma in CHAPTER ONE
applauded every change in the ULTIMATE books. ----J.Byrne

Maybe it was because Ultimate Spider-Man #1 was worth more than Chapter One #1?

Wizard  would index how much USM would rise in value while praising the creative team, on the other hand, they also took shots at JB's run on CO to the point of calling him a continuity wrecking monster.

Andrew writes: "I'd just love a world where John phones Mr Brevorrt (or
Ralph Macchio) and, after he's picked his jaw off the floor, he listens to
John pitch DOOM WAR! for the FF. And then a SPIDER-MAN arc with Marc
Guggenheim. The only thing better than that would be more NEXT MEN."

Now THAT'S a world I'd like to live in!

I might live to regret this, but just for fun, let's take a look at how Brand
New Day has lived up to John's challenge...

• No new X-titles -- n/a But we've only had ONE guest appearance by
Wolverine, that's gotta count for something!

• No recycling of 20 and 30 year old storylines -- CHECK. We even had a
six-month moratorium on using "established" villains.

• No more "writing for the trade", which also means… -- CHECK.

• No stories that run more than 3 issues -- Except for "New Ways To Die,"
CHECK

• No pinup covers -- In a year of thrice-monthly publication, we've only
had three so far: 546 (the start of BND), 549 (the start of my first arc) and
552 (the start of Bob Gale's first arc)

• No fake deaths -- CHECK

• No real deaths -- CHECK

• No breaking of the status quo by the latest flavor of the month
"talent". -- Zeb Wells and I are the only newbies and Zeb's not part of the
writing team anymore, so you just got me.

Maybe you should send an open letter to Tom Brevoort and say "Ok, give me
a miniseries with no editorial input whatsoever and I'll show you how it's
done."

••

"We were prepared to give Byrne pretty much anything he asked for, but we
had no idea his demands would be so unreasonable."
