I think that's what Miller is trying to get to with Dick. Batman knows that the Grayson's murders were part of some organized crime thing and he's showing Dick just how involved and deep he is going to have to get before he makes that commitment to Batman and his agenda. He's forming that "understanding" and building that "common purpose".  It's just taking 18 issues and 17 years to tell the tale.
