"I want really minimal color on this. Were it no so time consuming, I'd be
tempted to try it myself."

Hmmm....maybe you should attempt at least a page on your own, and send that to IDW as well. That way the colorist should have a good idea of what you have in mind.

… wonder if the colored version will look washed out as opposed to subtle.

••

Actually (!!) that would not necessarily be a bad thing!

I don't know if IDW has ever used Dave Stewart as a colorist, but I think he would work nicely over JB's pencils. I love the work he does on the Hellboy/BPRD titles and over Tim Sale.

I'm thinking of the light watercolour tiniting sometimes applied on those pasted-in illustrations in books of roughly that period. There would be light colour washes and large areas of open white.  or the slight colour tinting on black and white photographs to bring out faces and eyes and the odd costume detail.

But whatever it ends up being, I'm looking forward to it. (I need to stop worrying about the colour before I start colouring the example pages, posting them and piss JB off. )

Funny... that answer paints a very vivid image of what I think the colors should look like.... I wish I had the time to color it myself!

Maybe the colors like in Corto Maltese by Hugo Pratt ( watercolor or traditional inks ) could be an inspiration for the colorist.

Scanning at an (optical) 600ppi and then bumping down to 300ppi would yield ideal results. Not to mention the highest bit depth.

And make sure to turn off auto sharpen (auto anything from silverfast software)

just my 2 cents <I think we have the same scanner>

That page has me salivating, for sure.

IDW is a rising star in my book by now. Bringing a lot of goodies (and a lot of it JB) to the comics table.

Here's hoping they rise high enough to start paying real money. My
accountant gets mad at me when I do stuff for FUN.

Ah, but doesn't that cover your choice of profession? :-)

I do point that out. I also point out that the "Big Bucks" we think we get paid
in comics are slave wages compared to the kind of money that's thrown
around for doing the same kind of work in, say, advertising. Or Hollywood.
