Most of Marvel's early comics were bi-monthly; FF, ASM, Hulk, Journey Into
Mystery. I think it took a couple years for ASM to go monthly, maybe
following FF in that regard after seeing how well it sold.

••

One of the things that kept most comics from being monthly was that very
few artists could produce 24 pages per month. Jack Kirby was very much
the exception to the rule, but his towering presence at Marvel started to
dictate the whole shape of the industry -- and that's where problems set in!

The major reason that Marvel titles were mostly bi-monthly during their Silver Age renosance was the distribution agreement they had signed years earlier.  The distributor and DC comics were owned by the same company, and Marvel was limited to 8 titles a month.  This played a factor in the anthologies having two characters in each issue.  I recommend this book.

The feeling I get from reading (and re-reading, and re-re-reading ...) those early Marvel books is that Stan and Jack had a blast.  While they were making a living, they weren't trying to get rich and didn't have an inflated perception of the value of their work. Nor did they know they were at the dawn of comic book titles that would run in the hundred issues plus.

So they went about packing as much goodness into each and every issue as they could.

Pure magic!

Yes, that's probably why so many DC titles were bi-monthly and twice-
quarterly, too.

Wow.  We won't ever see that again!

Proving my point because I can, and because JB made a snarky post. (since deleted).

And yours is so snark-free.

(Preemptive strike: And so is this one.)

Gee, we won't get any more of John Dick's wit & wisdom, now that he's been canceled.

Such a sad life these trolls live.

I love the fact that Don McGreggor's letter is every bit as wordy and overdone as his later comics work (and I say that as a fan of Mr. McGreggor's comics work).

Heh, I was thinking the exact same thing.  A single page of one of his Black Panther stories had more words in it than an entire issue of most comics today.  Don could overdo it sometimes, but I'll take wordiness over the modern, decompressed comics you can read in 2 or 3 minutes because they're all pictures and no words.

After a round of congratulations from his troll buddies, he'll be back.
