Here's a really neat blog post featuring letters from future comic book professionals. Love the last one! ;)

Thanks for sharing, Derek. I'm a big fan of Bully's blog - it's one of the most fun comics-related places on the Internet.

Huh! Alan Kupperberg (Paul's brother, yes?) grew up in my old neighborhood!

That one from Stan Lee is priceless and talk about a ringing endorsement from one of the original creators.
I have the FF dvd complete works and I spend almost as much time pouring through the old ads and letters to the editor as I do the actual comic. How awesome it must have been to be a kid and to have been with the FF family right from the start.

Sterling --- it was AMAZING!
Okay -- I wasn't there "right from the start". My first issue was 5, so almost
a year into the run, but BOY what a place to start! Everything clicked in that
issue. I can look back now and be amazed at how much story Stan and Jack
packed into those 24 pages. And within a few months of my starting to buy
the book, it went monthly! Imagine, 24 pages of superhero adventures
produced by the same writer and artist every month!! How did they do
it? (What? By being professional about it? But that's too much like work!)

I'm a huge fan of Jill Thompson. That is cool that she is a Byrne fan.

I love the fact that Don McGreggor's letter is every bit as wordy and overdone as his later comics work (and I say that as a fan of Mr. McGreggor's comics work).

What? Do you mean... comics are a JOB? But jobs aren't fun!
Putting these jokes* aside, I wonder how many modern creators started as readers. It seems that most of the authors who I have seen in the last... 20 years?, were fans. No writers or artist who say "I never liked this stuff, but I have to eat and pay bills!" around, aren't them?
* Well, jokes... how many "authors" believe comics aren't a job?

FF5 was almost a year into the run? I didn't realize the book wasn't monthly from the start. Was it bi-monthly? For how long?

Most of Marvel's early comics were bi-monthly; FF, ASM, Hulk, Journey Into Mystery. I think it took a couple years for ASM to go monthly, maybe following FF in that regard after seeing how well it sold.
