This original was sold at Heritage in 2005. This is the description of the
piece:
"John Byrne - Captain America and Vindicator Hand Colored Tryout Page
Original Art (circa 1971). Here's proof that Vindicator of Alpha Flight was
created years before John Byrne even joined Marvel! As Byrne explained in
The X-Men Companion, published in 1982, "Vindicator goes back to my
college days, when he was called the Sentinel, and then the Guardian... I
created him in 1970 or 1971... In fact, somewhere Duffy Vohland, I think,
has a badly colored page that has Vindicator battling Captain America
that dates from those early days." That would put this page several years
before Byrne's first published comic book work, and six or seven years
before Vindicator made his first published appearance as "Weapon Alpha"
in X-Men #109. The name Guardian, mentioned above by Byrne, later
became the official name of the character when the Alpha Flight series
began. The distinctive "Byrne cheekbones" are among the hallmarks
evident on this early effort, which would have to be one of the earliest
pieces of Byrne sequential art you'll find. The page has an image area of
10" x 15". Aside from paper creases in the center of the page and at the
corners, the art is in Very Good condition."

That AF 26 cover page is bloody beautiful. The forced perspective on it is fantastic, and anything with Diamond Lil, Flashback and the original version of Wild Child (not that pseudo-hero Wildheart horseshit) sets me a-droolin'. I always dug the first Omega lineup - except Smart Alec. He was a git : ).

Can those try-out pages be found together anywhere, or will it be hunt and peck? I'd love to see more of early Guardian.

I don't know where you could find other pages from this tryout since this
one is the first I ever saw. I couldn't find this one or others in the archives of
this site.

Yes, even all of them are stored in this site, but I was refering to Guardian

Wow! Great samples of his classic FF run embellished by Sinnot, one of the
best classic inkers! What a fond memories! And a fantastic cover from his
JLA run! Great score! I'm looking forward to receive the TPB of this series,
because from the pencil galeries in this site, I think that this is his best
recent work imho.

BTW, what do you think about Ordway's additions to the original drawing? I
can also check that he added drawing till the borders of the board, which
was also used in the printed version...

Personally, I think Ordway ruined the original drawing. Of all the changes
Ordway made redrawing this one (since we really can't call that inking, can
we), perhaps the biggest shame is the loss of the impact of Superman's
expression.
Ordway also removed all the shading and lighting clues JB had set up for the
piece, so instead of dramatic lighting the poor confused colourist gave us,
well, what we got.
Ugh.
Really glad you posted the original pencils, Ferran! Thanks!
