I've loved Giffen since he was doing Dr. Fate backups in the Flash back in

Can someone tell me why Doctor Strange wore the full face covering mask? I
know there was a point where he did, just don't know why.

It was an attempt to give him a "secret identity." 

(Reality was altered so the world believed his true name was "Stephen Sanders.")

It might have stuck longer had the series not been cancelled 6 issues later...

the demon Asmodeus had appropriated the appearance of Dr Strange and had locked Strange out of our dimension.the mask was an attempt to beat the spell locking him out
