John Byrne, I want to let you know, for what it's worth,
that you have my sympathy and support.
You deal with this crap better than I would.
I don't know you personally, but you don't deserve to
catch sh*t for everything you say.
You probably don't NEED to hear it, but ...Good Luck.

One thing I came away from college with was that criticism was of a non-
personal nature.
A wise man once said, in referring to his work, "This isn't who I am, this is
what I do."
Unfortunately, in the arts -- and this includes comics -- there are many
people who cannot make this separation. And they stand on both sides
of the equation, fan and pro alike. Thus, a critcism of the work will
be taken as a criticism of the person. And, even more insanely, work
which does not please an individual will be taken by that individual as a
personal affront. It's a familiar -- all too familiar -- three pronged
litany:
I don't like this.
I don't like this, therefore it is bad.
I don't like this, therefore it is bad intentionally.
Factor in that the first thing many people do when they log online is
check their sense of humor at the door, and away we go.

Ok IN CONTEXT:
1-Aric, a board member, and frequent, tho pesky commissioner, asks you
about a supposed difference in your signiture style, you reply "Look at
some other comissions, Anal-Boy."
** Still out there, "Aric"?
2-A former member explains to you the reason he doesn't see "Supes" as
disrespectful to Superman (a FICTIONAL character), your reply: "it's ok to
call him "Supes", if I can call you "FUCK-FACE!"
**Yep, that's the context. Too rich for you? Too deep? One of those with
(noted above) sense of humor regrettably left in his other pants?
3- A former member tells you he's looking forwartd to reading Lost Girls
and you reply to him "Then you are a complete asshole!"
Hardcore pornography using characters from children's books (not
created by the author of the pornography -- the creators are dead and
cannot defend or protect their work), and he's looking forward to reading
it. That, by my definition, is a complete asshole.
There now.....Those are specific instances.....AND complete sentences.
Yes. So, just out of curiosity -- why did you say that the out-
of-context extracts were also "complete sentences"?

Did JB insult Bob Layton or did he just critique his work?
That's fair enough. If it's just about the work, then it's not accurate to say he insulted Bob. There are others less tenuous. How about calling Jim Lee, Mark Waid, and Peter David liars? How about Erik Larsens "background man"? Are all these random creators ganging up on John, spreading lies about him? Please.

People put a lot into a piece of work, but it seems to me that if you want to get better you have to sit back and look at it objectively. Give me your best shot and I'll come back stronger you bastards!

QUOTE:
As much as I like interacting with you, shutting down the message board would be a step in the right direction. Not the website, and definitely not the commission gallery, but the message board section. They aren't doing you anything but harm (you've seen your WikiQuote page, right?). Maybe go blog and allow reader comments. |

I dunno Trevor, I think the ship has long since sailed on this one. I've seen far too many who don't even feel the need to work up new material anymore. At this point, all shutting down the board would do is "punish" the fans who actually enjoy being here without stemming the tide of canned responses that come up every time JB's name is mentioned.
(As for wikiquote, ah if only us pro-Byrnes were as obsessive as our anti-Byrne counterparts. :-/ That page is in some serious need of balancing.)

How about calling Jim Lee, Mark Waid, and Peter David liars?
There are severe legal consequences attached to calling someone a "liar".
I have never done so.
++
How about Erik Larsens "background man"?
That was corrected and apologized for years ago. The background man
actually worked for Valentino.
Ah, but it's only the BAD news that makes for the good stories, isn't it?
HEY, ERIK LARSEN! SEEMS I GOT CONFUSED AND MIXED UP YOUR BOOK
WITH VALENTINO'S! SORRY ABOUT THAT! ALSO SORRY FOR SHOUTING
AND REPEATING MYSELF, BUT APPARENTLY SOME PEOPLE ARE A BIT DEAF
AROUND HERE.

Did anyone read Erik Larsen's article on the topic over at the CBR page? He had some good ideas how to resolve a lot of this mess without creating a new unresolved storyline. |

Yeah, I agreed with a lot he had to say about it. In general, if there's a way to get you to a place you want the character to be, it's best to do it in a way that doesn't automatically toss out everything that came before.
The interesting thing about "not wanting divorce" is that all the articles I've seen on the subject say "they split up," which is basically a euphamism for divorce anyway. Still can't figure out how "divorce = bad" "deal with devil = good."

Still can't figure out how "divorce = bad" "deal with devil = good."
Arguably, it's a case of something I have discussed before, in different
contexts. That is the bad habit of writers who write what they know,
instead of considering what the characters should know. This is how we
end up with the whole world knowing Superman has a secret identity.
In this case, in the real world, divorce is still "bad". But Mephisto is
fictional. so the writers, unable to see the trees with that dam' forest
in the way, overlook the profound ramifications of what they have Parker
doing, and write "just a story".
This is why, as I keep harping and ranting on, it is so deadly to start
thinking of these things as "imaginary".

I love JB's work, enjoy his site and forum, but don't understand all this hostility towards him. Don't take offense JB, this is for all those out there who can't let shit go, but who gives a shit what JB says? If he says something you don't like, let it go. I don't agree with everything he says, why should you? Do we want a bunch of yes men around here? I hate suck ups. Be kind of a boring site if we did. Larson, McFarlane, and Layton are all big boys, if they want to say something I'm sure they could. Everyone has a web site now days. I appreciate that JB is accessible to his fans, you don't often get that kind of access in the world. Thanks JB.

who gives a shit what JB says?
I have said this many times myself. If the Crusaders want to do something
valuable with their lives, there are plenty of REAL causes. Let them go
contest the American Nazi Party, or the Ku Klux Klan.
Of course, those guys will kick their asses. I'm a safe target. Especially from
anonymity.
