I'm glad the Shaper of Worlds thing didn't happen, it would've been convoluted as well. Here's how to remove MJ if everyone hates her so much:"Peter, I'm leaving you and taking everything with me, do not ever mention me again in your comic. Good bye." Then Peter goes back to having no income in one panel! And MJ can't ever be mentioned again. Problem solved!

The problem with any "MJ leaves forever" ideas is that I don't get the impression that the folks at Marvel necessarily want to close the book on her character as a potential "romantic interest."

Isn't this the same guy (Quesada) that said "dead means DEAD"?

Why does anyone believe anything that guy says in interviews?

Joe Q sure has come a long way from "Dead Means Dead," hasn't he?  Now it seems like he's on a mission to bring back every character that was ever killed off.

BTW, Matt, how has this whole Spider-Man thing been doing at your store?

Was kinda amazed that Eugene, Oregon's local TV news actually did a story about this yesterday! Interviewed our area comic book store manager and everything!! And said manager reported that Spidey is flying off the shelves, so it must all be good.

On a related note, I finally had a chance to read the much-debated #545 for myself and must grudgingly admit that it wasn't nearly as gawdawful as I was anticipating. No work of genius by any means, but certainly worth the $0.00 and 15 minutes of time it took to catch up with it at a Borders.

Dead means dead for women. All the bad guys, big macho men and whores get killed and come back all the time with no fanfare. Magneto came back from being decapitated. Cable gets blown up or shot point blank to the head all the time.

It's selling about the same as it has been for months now. The latest storyline hasn't really boosted sales at my shop in all honesty. And the fans that talk about the recent storyline all seem to agree that it's a horrible idea.

<<< Now it seems like he's on a mission to bring back every character
that was ever killed off.>>>

There's something to be said for that. I mean, let's face it: Over the years,
comic book writers went on a killing spree. Supporting casts were
whittled down to the barest bones. Death was running rampant in Marvel
comics, and most books never recovered from it.

Circa 1995, when I was working in the Spider-Man editorial group, I
suggested--only HALF jokingly--that in one of our December issues, we
run a full-page pin-up saying "Happy Holidays From the Spider-Man
Supporting Cast!" And the illustration would be a graveyard featuring, but
not necessarily limited to, the following tombstones:

1) Aunt May (who had only recently died in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 400)
2) Norman Osborn (still considered dead at that point)
3) Harry Osborn
4) Gwen Stacy
5) Captain Stacy
6) Ned Leeds
7) Nathan Lubensky
8) Lance Bannon
9) Miles Warren
10) Jean DeWolff

That's a LOT of characters to have killed off, even over the course of what
was then 32 years. And the fact is, no new characters were introduced to
fill the voids left when these characters were written out. Who became
Peter's best friend once Harry was gone? No one--unless you count Mary
Jane. Who was a constant reminder to Peter that "with great power there
must come great responsibility" once Aunt May was gone? No one. Peter's
actions made Aunt May a widow--she's supposed to serve as a constant,
living reminder of why Spider-Man must be a force for good and stopping
crime.

Crucial elements of the mythos were torn away and nothing was put in to
replace them. Over the last few years, the surviving members of the
supporting cast were barely even used. With Peter no longer working at
the Daily Bugle, there was no Jameson, no Robbie, no Betty. Granted, I
stopped reading the books after "Sins Past," but my understanding is that
the focus since then was pretty much exclusively on just Peter, MJ, and
Aunt May.

And the Hulk--over the years, we've lost Jarella, Glenn Talbot, General
Ross, Betty, and Jim Wilson.

I'm convinced that Jarella was killed off so that the Hulk could have his
own "Gwen Stacy" story. But I digress...

Look, I'm very pleased that General Ross is back, and I'm loving the role
he's playing in WORLD WAR HULK (still working my way through that
story). He SHOULD be around, and shout NOT be killed off again.

And I would fully support the return of Betty--as long as it's not done as
poorly as it was in the Bruce Jones run, which, incidentally, seems to have
been written off entirely as a bad dream. With Betty having a big role in
the new movie, and being played by Liv Tyler, I would argue that this
summer would be an ideal time to bring her back, and I think Greg Pak
would do a masterful job at it.

"Dead means dead" is a good policy to have--but when you're killing off
so many characters and hurting the long-term prospects of your ongoing
series, it's a policy that can and should be broken, at least on a case by
case basis.

By the way--I loved when Jean Grey was brought back for X-FACTOR, and
I was really bummed by her apparent death in Grant Morrison's X-Men
run. That's a death I'd undo in a heartbeat.

I think Jean's death was probably the start of all the other deaths.  It was as big of an influence on comics as "Dark Knight Returns" and "Watchmen" have been over the years.

As much as I agree with you about the other pointless deaths, Jean's was a HUGE moment in comic book history.  I wish her death had stuck.

I haven't bought a Spider-Man comic since "Sins Past" ended just about three years ago (yes, it's been that long).

Reading through this thread I find I have no emotion about the reboot at all.  I won't be picking up any Marvel comics because of this and therefor nothing has changed for me.  Marvel comics killed Spider-Man for me 3+ years ago.  I really don't think there's anything they could do that would bring me back short of a total regime change, total continuity reset and a return of comic creators that mostly haven't worked there in years.
++++++++++

Pretty much the same story for me.
