<<I'm confused. I think you're saying the "powers that be" got scared of how fans might react to a 3 issue clone story where the current Peter Parker turned out to be the clone...>>
Just to clarify... 3 MONTH event X 4 monthly titles(and whatever specials would have been created) would have been a minimum of of 12 BOOKS.
<<But if that's the case, then why did the "story" get longer than three issues? It sounds like they made it bigger when they wanted it smaller. Do I understand you correctly about that? >>
As I have stated elsewhere, the initial sales on the CLONE STORY were good... actually rising or staying steady during a period where everything else was dropping like a stone. Readers were intriqued by Ben Reilly. SO, MARKETING in the infinite wisdom demanded the story be stretched. Later on, as I have stated, everyone was getting COLD FEET.

The ultimate goal was for Ben Reilly to take back the Peter Parker identity and we'd have a single, struggling-to-make-ends- meet Spider-Man again ++++ With blond hair! I sort of dug the costume, but the blond hair was awful!

A word from the editor:

I loved the 3 parts of the Dan Slott Brand New Day story. I didn't read the Joe Q OMD crap, and don't intend too.
Brand New Day is the real Spider-Man, true to the Stan Lee, Marv Wolfman or Roger Stern (amongst many other classic scribes) version.
To enjoy do as if we only got the illusion of change since 1985. Ignore all the crap, including OMD. It is very easy to do as if it never happened.

And the firs thing I notice is how impressively LONG the credits have gotten.
You know the old expression..."Two man cooks make for a really great meal." Right? Isn't that how it goes? It certainly was the how it worked out in the Clone story days. I remember fonbdly back on 2 hour telephone conferences with all the writers and easily five editorial staffers. THOSE were the days!

Slott "Gets" Spider-Man. I have not enjoyed the title this much or recognized the character in years..
I'm still modding the Spider-Man Message Board and still amazed at how many people are arguing what Spider-Man should be about. Feel free to wander over if you have any interest in educating the young und. ;)

I'm glad there's been an explanation of Ben Reilly and the Clone Saga amongst this. The reason is I bought a Spider-Man/Punisher 2 part story off of eBay. I got 3 pages in and there's this guy called Ben Reilly being Spider-Man, no mention of Peter Parker. I was so confused about the whole thing that I've still not read them. Now I have an idea of what was going on, I'll dig them out.
If I was to pick up a issue of Spider-Man in a year or so, I don't think I'd be so confused as I was by the whole Ben Reilly thing if I was not in the comics loop. I think it will read like the Spider-Man someone like me, who mostly knew him from TV shows and films would recognise.
