Brian, you should watch the Marvel: Ten and Now special with Joe Q and Stan Lee. Its moderated by Kevin Smith. But basically, he loves it.

Slap me for saying it, but Stan has become basically a corporate shill for Marvel (and getting handsomely paid for it). I'm sure he says he likes what is going on there, but does he really know what's going on between the covers of those books?

Is he a shill because you don't agree with him or because you are an expert mind-reader?

This reminds of something I read a couple of months back (sorry, I don't recall exactly where, so take it with a grain of salt): Stan was in a panel at a con, talking about how revealing his secret identity to the world would be the last thing Peter Parker would ever do. Then somebody whispered to him that that had happened just a short while ago. The look on Stan's face was apparently one of shock.

Never tried to read his mind there, Sparky. Stan has been the public "happy voice" for Marvel for years. I just don't believe (my opinion..no mind reading...mind reading gives me a headache) that he reads Marvels current product, at least not to any great degree. And Taavi's post just above mine seems to bear that out.

I know one thing, MY dollars didn't go towards their increase. The Marvel titles I buy have decreased from about 15 (as of 2 years ago) to 2 currently. And soon it will be just 1 once Cassaday is done with Astonishing. That 1 being Wolverine: Origins because I'm a huge Steve Dillon fan.
However, I'm still stunned at how well they're doing with all the CRAP they're putting out.....

"How well they're doing" is relative. Most of their books would still have been canceled when I started in the Bizniz. A decade or two of diminished expectations have caused people now to rejoice over sales that would have been deemed dismal failures not so very long ago.

Kevin, I'm surprised your one Marvel title is Origins. I find that completely unreadable. You mention Dillon; despite liking his art in general, do you feel he does Logan justice? I find he draws him too thin, tall, and young.
As for EIC- what about Walt Simonson?

Imagine that you work for 5.75 and hour and you get a steady increase of 10% raises every year...you seem to be improving and the world is lovely....however, if 22 years agoo you were an executive bringing in 250,000 a year you would think that your current wage sucked.
and you would be right and looking for another way to bring in income.

Stan is a car salesman. He used to sell 1957 Thunderbirds and their mystique. Now he sells generic Lexus devoid of soul. But Stan still sells, as he always has.
