If Peter and MJ divorced, it would take 18 issues spanning 6 titles in a
special event cross over that would take 4 and a half years to come out, and
by the last single word of dialogue was paired up in the last single frame of
the same traced-from-a-photo, computer-coloured-to-muddy-crap nobody
would remember that they had ever been married, let alone that this "Pete"
guy was ever a superhero that put on a costume and fought bad-guys while
making bad puns.

I say that the Peter/MJ marriage is a complicated illusion... the result of the mad machinations of Mysterio.

Well... I'd like to be able to say that...

I would completely welcome the reset button. For me 'Brand New Day' would be starting the high school Peter Parker/Spider-Man from day one. No cosmic intervention, etc. Just a complete reset that takes the character that Steve & Stan created back from the clutches of fanboy insanity.

I like the idea of 3 issues a month and these would be my choices for the creative teams:

Writers
Howard Mackie
Glenn Greenberg
JB

Artists
JB
JRjr
Ron Frenz

Part of me truly wishes they would consider a "hard reset" of the Marvel
Universe, but I fear what the outcome would be.

Howard and I very briefly considered the Shaper of Worlds, but it was decided that was too "cosmic" a solution for a "street level" character like Spider-Man.

For several years now, I have said that, given the power, I would "reset" the Marvel Universe by ordering that as of a given shipping month -- for the sake of discussion, say January 2008 -- the status quo on all the books would revert to what it was circa, say, 1977, while the time frame remained Present Day. The books could then proceed from that point without deliberately repeating storylines and, as with comics for yore, without "real time" passing. Topical references, yes, but not to be considered indications of "time passing". Everything, as before, happens now.

This would be done as an editorial fiat, not a story stunt. And if some titles had to disappear completely because of this -- small price to pay for a second chance of this magnitude.

...Peter whining and moaning...

Careful, John--you'll wind up on George Berryman's s#*$ list. He is a demi-god to the countless fans who think of Marvel's flagship book as "The Amazing Mary Jane occassionally guest-starring Spider-Man."

The co-founder of Hero Realm, he's already threatened to drop all Spider-titles if the marriage is undone. Can plagues of Biblical proportions be far behind?

Maybe it's because I slipped into the comics a year or two before the Peter/
MJ marriage, but I never saw MJ as Peter's soulmate. From the cartoons, he
was interested in Betty Brant. From the Marvel Tales I was picking up, the
love of his life was Gwen. In the current books he had just broken up with
the Black Cat. I'm still disappointed he didn't have a go at Bambi, Candi, and
Randi.

I would welcome that solution, JB...  And if Spider-Man being "street level" is a problem, maybe the Shaper was working on something really big, and the affects on Spider-Man's life were (to him) incidental and inconsequential...

Uhhhhh...Hero Realm is site about comics news/reviews, Matt. George Berryman is one of the most vocal supporters of the marriage and characters "growing and changing" so they don't become "stagnant."

And I never implied you should care.

Berryman sounds like he's in the wrong field of interest.
