QUOTE:
... Why would the Hand give a fig about Dr Octopus? |

The second Doctor Octopus (Carolyn Trainer who used to be Octavius'
student) and Stunner (original Octopus' girlfriend who first showed up
bit before his death) had their hands in it too, but it's been a while
since I read the story so I don't remember what they offered to the
Hand in exchange for reviving the man both of them loved.

Should've done that in the first place, then you wouldn't have complained about me making such an offensive point.
But for the sake of everyone else, here's how it stands:
-I *think* JMS intended to make people dislike Gwen in hopes of readers eventually forgetting her.
-Glenn thinks that someone COULD argue that JMS intended to make people dislike Gwen in hopes of readers eventually forgetting her.
I'm sure that clarifies it for everyone because I don't want anyone thinking Glenn and I might be in cahoots.

That's crazy. I dislike Hitler, yet haven't forgot about him. You can't forget someone, you can just go on. Or you ignore. But you don't forget.

With Gwen being made a major character in Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 over the past few years, it's disingenuous to make a claim that anyone at Marvel wanted her to be "forgotten." Rather, I would say that JMS saw that she was being used elsewhere and wanted to put his mark on the character.
Which he did, the same way a dog puts his mark on a fire hydrant.

Good point, Brendan. It is strong enough to actually make me retract and say that maybe JMS only did it to knock her off her pedestal. The Ultimate version certainly wasn't on one.

For someone who's been here for a fairly short time, you certainly have
quite the attitude. FYI--your point wasn't offensive. It was simply
inaccurate, with regards to lumping me in with you. Instead of just
backing off, you decided to go the obnoxious route.
<<<I *think* JMS intended to make people dislike Gwen in hopes of

Okay, that's what you believe. You've made that clear.
<<<Glenn thinks that someone COULD argue that JMS intended to make
people dislike Gwen in hopes of readers eventually forgetting her.>>>
Again, please stop speaking for me.
I think I made it clear that I was simply putting forth a THEORY, one
that--again, I think I made clear--that I myself didn't NECESSARILY
believe. Just putting it out there for discussion, which is what this
message board is all about.

I couldn't disagree with this sentiment more strongly if I tried. Aunt May should never have died. Period. Just as you said. But to say May shouldn't have been brought back because it "cheapens" ASM 400 is just plain silly. ASM 400 was a cheap story, an easy way out to answer all the fans at the time clamoring for her death. May is a constant living reminder for Peter that "With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility". Having her die, killing her off, removes that very important part of his reason for being just as much as May finding out Peter is Spider-Man and ::choke!:: forgiving him. What cheapens the character, what makes him "less than", is removing that guilt with her forgiveness and also killing her off in ASM 400.

There hasn't been a story since his resurrection that is half as good as before his death. Right now, he's a second rate Kingpin; a powerful NYC businessman who has a mad-on for Peter Parker.

Matt, I agree that Aunt May should've never been killed off in the first place. Completely, 100% agree.
My point was about bringing her back after her death. That's what I'm torn about, not killing her off in the first place.

I look at bringing her back as one of the few instances in recent memory where Marvel is concerned as saner heads prevailing.
