Looked that name up. At least it gives some context to Xavier killing his twin in the womb.
The euthanization of "Ugly John" doesn't quite fly, though. How did Scott and Logan determine that he couldn't be healed? Did they ever stop and ask if he could be saved? Have they had medical training? Again, asking.

There have been plenty of times when fellow X-Men have been at death's door. Cyclops never shot their heads off, did he?

Yes, the difference is quite dramatic.
What issue is that, btw?

Now that's how the X-Men should be written!

Not that great an example. Scott has just a few more personal ties to Charles Xavier than to Ugly John, no?

There are no qualifiers in the statement "the X-Men fight to preserve life, not destroy it."
Just because Cyclops hardly knows someone doesn't mean he'd casually blast him in the face. Again, how did he determine Ugly John was beyond help?

Ugly John didn't look like he was that close to death to me, I would think that Scott would try to save him first.
With the example posted a few above, bleah, I did not enjoy the X-Men at that time. ( I know thats not point of the post though ) Oddly enough I enjoyed the X-Men when Storm had the Mohawk and they all had ugly costumes. That was a interesting time period (Not even close to JB quality but entertaining)

I'm not sure I understand: In the first few panels, Scott is quite prepared to kill the brood queen. By the end of the page, he tells everyone an x-man never gives up while there's hope, AFTER the Professor has begged Scott to kill him. Surely he'd respect the professors wishes? Why would he assume his judgement was superior at that point, especially given his own comparison to what happened to Jean?
It seems clumsy to me. Maybe I'm not seeing enough to be able to fully understand it though.
