What could there possibly be to bitch about in your run on Superman? I wish it was still going on now.

Doesn't particularly read like that to me; just reads like a criticism of the
work.

I'm not sure how saying someone would rather "read pretty poetry" is a valid
criticism. It simply sounds like Chad was being condescending to Morrison
fans.

It's not always negative, mind you. There are some writers and artist
(and I have been among these, too) who pick up a positive endorsement
from the masses, and it seems nothing will ever change it. Sometimes we
will see the endorsement being modified, so that it has a few qualifiers
(the way Shooter used to say of one writer that he was probably the best
working in comics -- just not a very good comicbook writer) but often,
once a mantra is in place, nothing can shake it. We have, for instance,
seen occasions where a writer will come right out and say in so many
words that he doesn't like superheroes, yet the fans will still cough up
their memorized lines about how much love for the genre shines thru in
his work.

I wish people would stop caring what any particular creator thinks about
anything. I'll just enjoy the work for what it is; if the creator hated each
and every second of creating it, I couldn't begin to care less, as long as
I
enjoyed it.

Adorably, some person over at Newsarama says this:
some person over at Newsarama wrote:
There’s nothing wrong with superheroes being superheroes, of course, but Byrne fails because he is wrong: The X-Men are not super-heroes. Neither are the Fantastic Four.

I'd say that's a bad case of I'm-ashamed-of-my-hobbyitis.

True, but it's fair to point out that a number of posters at Newsarama agree with JB. For example, I thought this post by DJ Coffman was right on the money:

"I think Byrne is right, and dead on. Super Heroes is a genre, just like anything else.

In “Westerns”, it would be like having a tv show about the Wild West, but instead people complaining about wearing hats and six shooters or having a gun fight. Not every character has to have a hat or outfit like that, but so goes the same in comics. It is totally weird to have a classic hero say “why are we dressing up like superheroes?”

Ugh."

What planet are these morons from? They're not superheroes? Then what are they? And apparently the man who wrote and drew them for years knows nothing about them?

Bruce - yes, fair enough. Going in, I was surprised to see some people agreeing with JB, and even one person suggesting that some of the comments on that blog post suggested a kind of 'Byrne-hating autopilot'.

Aaron - I wouldn't be surprised if, when asked, these people said, "they're metahumans!"

[Grammar.]

Ah, yes...metahumans.

Metahumans who use their abilities to protect mankind, fight injustice, save lives, etc.

But of course they're not superheroes!

A few years ago the response on Newsarama would have been unanimously against what JB is pointing out. So attitudes are changing.

FYI, here's the full quote from Morrison's first issue of New X-Men:

PROFESSOR X: Thoughts on the new school uniforms?
WOLVERINE: Suddenly I don’t have to look like an idiot in broad daylight.
BEAST: I was never sure why you had us dress up like super heroes anyway, Professor.
CYCLOPS: The Professor thought people would trust the X-Men if we looked like something they understood.
PROFESSOR X: That’s correct, Scott. However…I’ve been working on better ways to encourage people to trust mutants.

(Just to show how out of step I am here -- my response to Wolverine's comment was "yeah, I never liked Logan's original costume either." Of course, that was my response to the "yellow spandex" line in the first X-Men movie. I didn't take either line as meaning "superhero costumes are stupid." I took them as in-jokes.)

Sadly, I think using the term metahumans would make someone think you're
far lamer than superheroes.

"Hey, let's go see that new metahuman movie FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer!"
