I was thinking the other day that if Marvel ever gets a new EIC, he should make that a rule, David.

Having read this run over the last few years via ESSENTIALS I would say that any writer who wants to work in the super-hero genre at all should be required to read Stan and Jack's FF!

JB, did you go through a similar process when you started working on The
Thing? (breaking his rocky exterior down into comprehensible components)

How's this for a delayed response!

The Thing demanded a whole different approach than the one I took with Galactus. For one thing (ahem!) I realized right away that trying to draw the Thing's plates consistently from panel to panel was a short road to madness. So I concentrated on giving him basically the same face, shot to shot, but let the rest fall where they may.

As I worked with the character, my approach changed quite a lot. Compare my earliest issues of FF as writer/artist to recent commission pieces, and you will see that in the beginning I was copying Kirby/Sinnott (poorly), and in recent vintage I have found my own ways of "expressing" the Thing's distinctive look.

Unlike some recent artists, tho, this has been an evolutionary process, and not a case of my declaring, day one, "This is how ! draw this character!!"

I love witnessing evolution of an artists work or approach to a character; JB's FF work is really interesting to pore over in that respect (not just only for the great stories!).

Wow, JB!
I know The Thing commission was recently done, but WHAT in the world drew you back to a thread five and a half years old?

A link to this one was posted in another Galactus thread. When I clicked the link, I found the unanswered question!

How's THAT for a good Byrne story.

BTW JB, except for my proportion issue, the aspect that gave me the
most fits was the tubing that made up his eyebrows and framed his
face.

Thanks mostly to your artwork, I could probably draw Jim without
reference for the most part. With all of those vertical lines, and his
(lack of a better term) skirt, his crotch kept looking like it was a
loooooong way from his head, despite the fact it really wasn't. For
today's attempt, I've given him a bit more of a barrel belly and took
just a hair of his torso out. Now he looks right.
