Another great character needing a revival. Though I'm talking about Man-Thing shut your mouth, I could be talking the other guy as well.

Interesting "futuristic" spider symbol on the chest.

Man-Thing is a character designed for telling stories around him, making full use of secondary characters. Man-Thing acts as a kind of supernatural gavel, coming in to deliver macabre justice, or at least galvanize the story's climax.

Love to write Man-Thing myself, but a Roger Stern Man-Thing series would delight. Well, Roger Stern anything is a god in the form of a seductive swan.

The symbol is "futuristic" in the sense that this variation did not originally appear until 1979, while the Marvel Team-Up issue that the Man-Thing appeared in was published in 1978.

Up until 1979, Spider-Man's chest symbol was fairly nondescript. Black circle for the spider's head, an oblong body, and eight legs all pointing down.

In 1979, the symbol was changed (I think by John Romita, who was doing all the advertising/licensing art for Spidey at that time) so that two legs on either side faced up, making the symbol more distinctive (for trademarking purposes, maybe?). Interestingly enough, the new version first showed up during a mutli-parter in Amazing Spider-Man, with the result being that the symbol changed in mid-storyline (at the end of a cliffhanger, Spidey has the old symbol, and then at the start of the next issue, he has the new one)!

The revised version has stuck ever since, and has appeared in countless comics, cartoons, and the movies.

I just feel that I need to get my hands on some Man-Thing stuff to read when I see this. Do I misremember or did they publish an Essential Man-Thing? And I take it the Essential Marvel Team-Up haven't reached that far in publication yet...

The "muck" reminds me that I'd really love to see JB re-imagine some of the covers for the original Wein/Wrightson Swamp Thing series (even to the extent of imagining what covers he himself would've made for those comics). Ones that especially leaps to mind is the Werewolf issue (# 4 ?) and the one with Batman in it – just imagine Swamp Thing and Batman done JB style. Ok so I'm drooling, I'll snap out of it.

I never noticed before. Your symbol looks more like an actual spider, harkening back to the one that actually bit Peter, and not a fat-bellied tarantula like many artists draw it.
