Their is a practical reason for the red trunks, if you think about it.

No he has black trunks, which gets you closer to the answer.

Sorry to necro-post ...

Something that I find interesting is the tagline "Man of Tomorrow" isn't much used these days.  (I wasn't even 100% positive that it belonged to Superman, and Googled it before making this post to avoid looking like a shmuck.)  It was long before my time, but "Man of Tomorrow" makes me think that at some point in his career Superman was thought of as a futuristic and/or forward thinking hero, while today he's almost always thought of in retro-terms.

To get rid of the red trunks, you'd need to redesign the suit altogether. That patch of red is neccessary from what would otherwise be a boring blue from rib to shin. You have to break up that color somehow.

Superman's pulled in well over a billion dollars of profit since his inception. The trunks seem to be doing OK. If it ain't broke...

Agreed. I for one am sick of outfits and costumes being changed just for the
sake of change or putting a mark on a character.

Oh, and to answer the question: No. Just focus on what makes him
Superman and ignore the rest.

I dont like the red trunks, and never did, not even as a child. I always though they looked stupid. Still, I read Superman despite that small issue.

Often however, I hear from the civilian population that Superman's costume is silly, in particular his "wearing his underwear on the outside". I'm sure many of you have heard similar things.

The costume has been updated several times over the years and honestly I don't think removing the red trunks is that big of a departure.

I wouldn't mind the trunks being ditched.  It's not that I have anything against them per se: I don't find them old fashioned or corny or -- god forbid -- "underwear worn on the outside."  I merely find the costume to have a sleeker look without the trunks that I find more aesthetically pleasing.

"while today he's almost always thought of in retro-terms."

By some among us comic geeks, yes. So what?
