No, the original Superman is absolute. Maybe a new character named Metallurgy or something impressive, though (along the lines of whatever gets em). There is a need to interest readers the way we were interested as kids.

Joe, there are two things wrong with your statement:  First, there should only be one "version" of Superman -- the right one.  Second, that wasn't Superman; it was some kid in a red and blue suit.

I always assumed that the heroes I read in my youth had it imbedded in their character that they did the right things for the right reasons all the time.  They were the good guys! Now they get derision in the form of "nothing but Boy Scouts" when they are written that way.  They have to be dark, brooding, and full of angst.  They must have character flaws for us to relate to them.  Feh.  They are supposed to be inspirational figures.  When I was a 12 year old boy, I wanted to be Captain America.  I understood that Superman was a good man.  The only thing that should be updated are things that would make a character anachronistic (carrying pocket watches, or not being able to use a cell phone).

Considering that the original Superman has not only survived but thrived for 70 years, I'd say the short answer is, "No; the one we have is working just fine, thank you."
