 Joe: good try...
I asked him what  inspires him, and he pointed me to a commission gallery..When <I> do commissions, they are motivated by what the commissioner ASKS for, and what they PAY me .
PLEASE do not call my passion for comics into question..you have NO idea.If you would LIKE to know..ask, and <I> will give you a STRAIGHT answer.

 Thanks.

Oh for god's sake, give Stephen a break. He seems to be genuinely interested in the answer and I have to say I want to know as well. There are loads of things coming out right now that I love and I am always hurt when people say that there is nothing for them in the comics world these days. It feels like people are deliberately ignoring all the good stuff and claiming that all modern comics are rubbish.

Stephen, what would be your "warrant" to assume anything about John Byrne?

Only because you said "I should have known better" than to expect a straight answer from Mr. Byrne. Why "should have"? Seems like a host of unfair assumptions in that, and you replied perhaps unfair but certainly warranted. So what warrants it, if I may inquire?

"and this page (tho it looks like part of a two-page spread) you have posted
by Alan Davis is kind of my point. "-Andrew

Hi Andrew (waves), there's more to that double page spread, a nice shot of the "core" -Kirby_ like Space Station on which Galactus is brooding/planning/plotting, whatever.

I doubt I could find an issue where Jack Kirby had -no- quiet dialogue between  characters!

The point of this scan was to share a miniscule novelty with John, in case it had slipped him by, not to debunk or  assist any 'theories' about modern vs Silver age storytelling.

One of the most powerful drawings I've seen is the one John did of the Surfer with his head in his hands, very emotive and reflective. Power can come in the obvious action but it can also be presented in emotions, they are two seperate routes to the same storytelling end...a 'reward'. You reward the viewer with a powerful scene, is it a scene where Spiderman beats the crap out of the Hobgoblin over New York or is it a scene where Spiderman hold the limp body of Gwen Stacy?

I need to echo Leigh's comments. Stephen asked a question, made a comment. If JB wants to take offence, and whether it is warranted or not is something between JB and Stephen. I haven't yet seen anything blatant enough to warrant the way a lot of folks are jumping on board.

If there is need to, I think JB can handle himself on his own board.

Ah,NOW I understand...You have misread...I typed I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER after I had JUST typed " not the answers I was looking for"..meaning that I should have known better to be looking for a specific TYPE of answer.

But, I WILL say, that I am not surprised by the TYPE of answers he's given. There IS  ageneral consensus in the community that JB IS a cantankerous fella..and I have always just brushed it off..as I really dont care as much for the man, as his ART.
But over my time here,I amalways left with the IMPRESSION of a sad guy, so incredibly unhappy with the industry he is such a legend within.
So, my inquiries were sincere..I HONESTLY would LOVE to see him ENJOY a comic book of THIS era. And of course I would love to know what it is, if any.

Be good to each other.

P.S.  It is good to see you around here again, Steve.  Do not let the zealots scare you away.  Their hearts are in the right place.

I don't know about "deliberately ignoring," but when it seems like the company as a whole is moving in a direction you don't like, it considerably dampens your enthusiasm for looking deeper.  Even if you stick with the lower-on-the-radar "good stuff," it can still end up affected by the Big Books so it's not like you can really escape that.  And if you don't like the "what," the "how" isn't going to make that much of a difference.
