My apologies. In the future, I shall strive to be more specifically specific in my specificity (or lack thereof).

""No sense of history" has been my lament for
many a year now."

It never ceases to astonish me ... in the wake of (and
I despise using these abbreviations but it is the
shortest way of defining these events) 9/11 (in the
US) and 7/7 (in the UK) I have tried to remind
younger persons of exactly what we lived through in
the 60s, 70s and particularly the 80s ... the clear and
present knowledge that, at any fucking minute
the nukes could start flying and that was it.

Game over. You. Me. Everyone you know, their
mother and their dog. All of them, dead.

Give me Bin Laden over Brezhnev any day. I don't
wake up in the small, dark hours of the morning with
dreams of nuclear apocalypse burning in my head
these days.

Our terrors are smaller these days and, as bad as
they are, I'm thankful for that.

Cheers

Jim

It's all right, I've had my problems with that before.

My opinion on the subject is

Don't make fun of my 60s sci-fi comics and don't make fun of Star Trek
when Spock's brain is stolen.

Regarding the posters who have lived in and around Detroit and never been a victim of violent crime:  So what?  Are you actually saying it is a peaceful city?  All the dead gangbangers and the innocent victims cut down by their violence would, if they could, disagree.  It is an obscenely violent city.  That violence is almost exclusivley felt by those trapped within its ghettos.  I live in Ann Arbor and am not personally affected by it.  But I can read the Detroit Free Pess as competently as anyone.  Detroit is hell on earth for those stuck in its heart.

Jon, can we make fun of the space hippies?

What? I'm just asking. Not like I was going to actually do it.

Its no different than any other major city.  Besides the fact that Detroit is over fifty percent black.  As far as I know its the only major city that is.  Dead gangbangers?  Ghettoes?  I don't know what Detroit Free Press you're reading.

The biggest blow to Detroit is the dying auto industry.  The "ghettoes" as you call it, is a result of corrupt local politicians that will eventually lead Detroit into receivership.  With Downtown Detroit being rebuilt with two new ballparks and three casinos the "trapped"  poor are moving in drones.  Because they can't afford the higher property taxes.  But you wouldn't know that.  I do, because they are moving to where I live.

I'm with Jim.

I would also add that in the seventies we had the IRA bombing mainland bombing campaign in the UK which took the lives and health of many innocent civilians (including one of my schoolfriends) but I do not remember everybody getting their knickers in a twist over the "Catholic threat", or suggesting that age old civil liberties should be swept away in order to protect us from the nasty men

Our attitude then was it had to be 'business as normal" otherwise in effect the terrorists had won.

So more than a murder per day, during the LOWEST crime year since 1994, isn't significant?  And as to ghettos,

And, really, what comfort should the people living in this shithole take from the fact that it is safer than a freaking war zone?  "Hey, at least we're not living in Sadr City!"  And there was much jubilation...

"...in the seventies we had the IRA bombing mainland bombing campaign in
the UK..."

After the events of 9/11, I'd like to think that the majority of the idiotic
Americans who were actively fundraising for the IRA finally woke up to the
fact that blowing up innocent people to further your cause doesn't always
make you a freedom fighter.
