Is America making less than a million comics a month now?  I'd think, if there's a couple of titles that sell over 100k, and several in the 30-70k, the total amount of comics being produced now might be more than a million... is that possible or am I way off?

Civiians traditionally have little understanding of the comicbook industry. Not surprising, since so many fans know little more. Will's reference was probably supposed to indicate that there were individual titles that sold a million a month --- tho even that would not be an accurate count.

They sure don't make 'em like that anymore

******

They do, you just have to look a bit harder for them. Any chance of a moratorium on blanket statements?

******

Seriously? they (specifically Marvel as mentioned in my post) still publish "monster" comics? how could I have missed this?
perhaps because they don't.

"

I couldn't agree more.

The notion that "they" are still producing "those" comics if you "just look for them" points up quite neatly most of what's wrong with the industry today.

Do you miss growing up visiting the comic stand over where you are from, JB?

I agree completely that isn't nearly as much diversity as there once was, and that it's a problem.

David, I was responding to what I thought was your point, specifically:

"...a story that could be read and appreciated by ages seven to seventy - without any senseless pandering to supposedly "adult" themes, "reimaginings" or "retcons"."

Yes, you began by citing monster comics, but the specific comic you talked about was a Spider-Man comic, albeit one that featured a monster.

I believe my point stands.  There are many comics that can be read and appreciated by ages seven to seventy, and that don't pander to supposedly adult themes, reimaginings, or retcons.  Saying that they don't make as many comics like that as they used to is true.  Saying they don't make them like that at all is a blanket statement that isn't true.

Man, that kid couldn't even reach the books on the top row!  Imagine walking down the street and seeing that rack of books!

One of the early 'Peanuts' strips had Charlie Brown clambering up a  rack much like the one in that picture, scattering comics everywhere, and then wondering how the storekeeper did any business because he was always so 'grouchy'!

I don't have to imagine. That was pretty much my first experience of American comics in their natural habitat. I was eight, and the display was wider and taller than I could stretch. I came away with my first non-reprint BATMAN.

Hmmm -- that cover didn't impact me too much, did it?
