...crass focus on what he was wearing when he passed away.*** Keep this sort of thing in mind when you read newspapers and magazines, or watch the news. Reporters write the stories they want to write. Facts are used only to the extent they support that story.

...a bittersweet farewell that really cuts me today.*** We were SO raked over the coals for that, at the time! The last time such a "dedication" had run, it was at the end of a fill-in done by Bob Brown, who had died by the time it saw print. Even in those pre-internet days there were plenty of people ready to be offended on behalf of anyone else, and Dave's little "I'm not dead" was seen as a HUGE insult to Bob, and a trivialization of his death. Some people just don't get it, do they?

I caught that CNN article. It was pathetic. But I thought about it for a second and realized whoever wrote that wouldn't have anywhere near the public interest and grief when he/she died. So screw 'em. Those who truly number themselves as Dave Cockrum's friends/fans/admirers know the real deal.

Mark Evanier has a great write-up about Mr. Cockrum's contribution to DC. It still amazes me that they let him walk over the ownership of a a couple of pages of original art.

Different times, Kurt...
The Times piece was better, but they still had some errors. They mention his service in the Navy but then it says "after his discharge from the Air Force..."
Interestingly (to me at least), is that I lived on Guam probably around the same time as Mr. Cockrum! My father was in the Navy (Medical Service Corps) and we lived there around 1971 to 1973 or so. Doubtful that they knew each other as my dad was an officer and DC was probably an enlisted man, but you never know!

For as long as I can remember I have flashed on Dave whenever I hear that one line from Billy Joel's "Piano Man". And she's talking with Davey, who's still in the Navy..." Funny how these associations can form and lock in.

While the factual errors are deplorable, I'm not that offended by
mentioning his wearing Superman pajamas. The man's career was
superheroes, as such that kind of detail provides color to the story and
speaks of the fan. If his pj's were just blue or if he died in generic boxers
then it wouldn't have been mentioned. But they were related to his career
and claim to fame. If Jane Goodall died wearing Curious George pj's or
watching King Kong, it'd be mentioned for much the same reason. It's a
detail that relates to the person and what they are known for, whether for
good or ill.

The reference to Dave's Superman jammies was included to make sure civilian readers understood how retarded everyone is who works in comics. This was to maintain the proper level of contempt for the industry. It's a minor miracle the headline did not include HOLY DEATH BED, BATMAN!
