My memories of Dave Cockrum go back to my childhood, as a friend and I
were really getting into comics at the time. I was already a fan
of Uncanny X-Men with Byrne's
art when he told me about Cockrum's run on the title, which he had to
mention won some Eagle Awards at the time. This was maybe around
the time that #109 or #117 was out. Needless to say, I was
suitably impressed when I saw his copy of #103 with the Juggernaut and
Black Tom Cassidy (inked by Sam Grainger). When Byrne left and
Cockrum was announced to return, I stayed on the title and saw where he
proved himself as an excellent artist in his own way. Even with
Claremont's clunker of a space-opera storyline, he made some pretty
interesting character designs and page layouts and his storytelling
skill made everything flow evenly. When he did the Futurans as a graphic novel, I was hoping that he'd follow through on his vision with those characters.
Sad to say, we will never know. I only became aware of his health problems earlier this year, with an issue of Comicbook Artist
fanzine dedicated to his work. That issue also stood out as
showing some pages from an unpublished X-Men story that I think
would've done more justice to Professor X and his relationship with FBI
agent Amos "Fred" Duncan than anything which has gone through in its
place.
Hope you get to do everything that you wanted to do in the afterlife,
Dave. There'll be no fanboy editors messing around with you there.

"Dave saw the movie and he cried _ not because he was bitter," Meth said. "He cried because his characters were on screen and they were living."

Dave Cockrum had an impact on thousands and thousands of lives. His life’s work was the stuff of dreams. Pure imagination, channeled and put to paper for all of us to enjoy. Thank you, Dave.

Wow, another legend in comics passes. Dave Cockrum's work was
one of the selling points on many issues of comics i enjoyed growing
up. May he rest in peace.

And according to an article in today's Orlando Sentinel, he is being cremated while wearing a Green Lantern shirt, per his wishes.

I just saw the headline on the front page of aol. It strikes me as being quite rude to have to announce what someone was wearing when they died. No not quite rude. Very rude!

Bob, that story in question came from the Associated Press, which provides news stories to TV stations and newspapers across the globe.
I thought the story itself was fair and respectful, but I didn't care for the headline at all. Whether you like comics or not, poking fun at a man's death isn't cool.
Typically, headlines are written by a copy editor, rather than the author of the story. I spent 10 years as a newspaper reporter, so I sometimes experienced the "joy" of reading an inaccurate or misleading headline attached to one of my stories.

Bruce, I agree that the article was fine. it was the headline that I too did not consider appropriate.
