R.I.P., Mr. Cockrum.

Tom Spurgeon's Comics Reporter website has a nice write-up on Dave Cockrum and his impact on the comics industry.

And yet a look at the "news" sections of both DC and M*****'s websites show no mention of Dave's passing.

Sad.

Such sad news; my heart goes out to Dave's family.

I was reading the Avengers Celestial Madonna tpb over the weekend, a series of issues I had not read before, and I was pleasently surprised to find Dave's art on two G.S. Avengers issues in it. He will be missed.

Would it have killed ^^***** (and even DC) to put a tribute up on their websites? Especially ^^*****, since he did the majority of his work for them.

63 is much too young. He was a great artist and shaped the X-Men... heck, his art redefined the team. I'd say he will be missed but, as has been noted, the big two haven't given him much work the last few years-- so I'd say I've been missing him for some time. My condolences go out to his family.

It seems he was left without work for much longer than that. I can't remember him on any monthly assignment in the late 80's or all of 90's.

A sad fact of the comics industry is that there are so many talented people out there like Dave Cockrum who don't get the work they deserve now. There are comic book professionals out there that should be working, that could show the industry how to produce great material month in month out, that never get heard from.

I was reading an interview with Mike Baron on a Punisher web site where he talks about this very fact. Despite writing a high selling book like the Punisher, and some of its various spin offs, for 5 years no one seems to want to give him or other guys from the 70's and 80's work at DC or Marvel anymore.

Joe, Dave Cockrum did work on Batman with Max Allan Collins in the early part of 1987 for about 5 or 6 issues if I recall. He was also used a few time by Paul Kupperberg on the later issues of Vigilante. Sadly, I can't recall him getting too much work after this period either.

A real shame gven what he contributed to the comic industry.

Paul Kupperberg and I were able to get Dave on a WONDER WOMAN annual when I was writing and drawing that title, despite resistance from higher up. Dave was always on my short list for artists, when I picked up an assignment that I was writing, not drawing. I'd suggested him for SPIDER-WOMAN, but when the pages started coming back to me Bart Sears was drawing them.

That was pretty much how it went.

****

I'm beset by a feeling of raw disgust.

R.I.P Dave Cockrum.  I didn't know you, but your work brought me hours of joy and entertainment when I was a kid.

What was the resistance to Dave's work? He did a great stint on LOSH and co-created the new X-Men. Didn't this rate highly enough with the powers that be to get him work?

It's kind of like Curt Swan being pushed to one side by DC after the 86 Superman reboot.

Very like that, since I tried often to get work for Curt, and got much the same response.

"Not commecial enough" is the most oft-repeated phrase.
