This is sad news - my condolences to his family.

A buddy of mine had a chance to meet Mr. Cockrum at the comics convention in Charlotte earlier this year. My friend reports that despite his poor health, Mr. Cockrum was a delightful person and a true gentleman. Comics fans around the world will miss him.

His art on & designs for the Legion of Super Heroes are the reasons I got into the book & came to love the characters in my youth. R.I.P. Mr. Cockrum.

Wow, I can't belive it.  Much too young.  Much too young.

RIP

And while this loss is not about me, I too cannot help but think...

Another bit of my childhood is gone.

The man may be gone, but his life and his work will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, sir.

We can hope, Greg -- but at times like this I wonder. We can, for instance, look for the next few days and weeks to be filled with fulsome praise for Dave from people who have spent the last few years resolutely not giving him work. This is, as noted many times before, not an industry that takes care of its own.

I won't forget. I'm sure others won't forget, either. And that's a start.

John Byrne

I said the exact same thing to my older brother last night when I mentioned that Dave Cockrum had died. I explained to my brother the integral part Dave played in designing the X-men , I showed him a few old issues of LSH, even a few Ms. Marvel books. He was extremely impressed and even recalled alot of the material ( he used to read comics as a kid but then dropped them as a teen). He said rhetorically "that guy must be rich" ... it broke my heart to tell him the truth.
