The world (in general) and specifically the world of comics, is diminished with his loss. He was a terrific artist and character designer. I'll miss seeing him on the convention circuit. Condolences to his loved ones.

I met him on Oct. 27 at a small, local convention. He was signing and sketching while hooked to an oxygen tank. Seemed in good spirits and had a smile for everyone I saw talk to him. He signed the first X-men comic I bought, way back when. He may have been as instrumental to my early perception of comic-book art as Aparo, Swan, and Andru.

Looking back on Dave's career, I found myself noting that he was part of that first wave of new talent that came into the industry after the interegnum of the late 1950s and early 60s. And what a wave it was! In a very short span of time we saw the arrival of folk like Neal Adams, Berni Wrightson, Walt Simonson, Mike Kaluta, Archie Goodwin, Roy Thomas, Len Wein, and Dave himself.Good company to be in!
