I have no problem with most of the nicknames mentioned in this thread(Well, perhaps I can do without Nick Fury's 'Wing-head' nickname for 'Cap'...only one nickname allowed!)
As a kid, I always hated the stupid names that the Hulk called various heroes('Bug Man' and so on). It got even worse in the old crossovers with DC, as he went up against 'Cape Man' and 'Pointy Ears'!

Considering the way real-life people are trashed on this board, the obsessive reverence for proper titles is amusing to me at best. I adhere to the request for the same reason that I signed up with my real name instead of my always-used online nick: because that is what our host has asked.

Personally, I always found the whole "Spidey"-"Shell-Head"-"Goldilocks"-
"Supes" type nicknames -- whether it was in-character or in letter columns
and in-house ads and bulletins -- to be cheesy.
...Says the guy who never had a problem with Matter-Eater Lad.

He's from a race of matter-eating people, don't judge him!

Other than Spidey, Benjy, and the occasional "Supes/Bats", I don't really use too many of those. Other than the classic Marvel, I don't even know of any that don't sound stupid (Maggy for Magneto?)
I think the old Marvel nicknames are endearing and add a touch of extra fun to those books though. It wouldn't be the same if Stan had taken them too seriously and left out that kind of crazy stuff.

You'll also find that visual endearments of serious comic book characters are accepted here, while the verbal endearments are frowned upon. Just another quirk of the forum.
If I refer to the Red Tornado as Reddy, the response will be a groan or sigh.
But I can turn the Red Tornado into an M&M with no negative response whatsoever. Just don't give the hero with a chocolate center a nickname.

The nick-names are interesting in-story. Used in real life, not so impressive.

Spidey and Cap are the only short forms I like to use. I like the nicknames, though (Shell head, Wall crawler...).

I don't use any of those terms, but I understand that they may be part
of some sense of familiriaty and affection some people feel about them.
I do feel like that for some, but I prefer to call them sometimes "Clark" or "Bruce", etc.

I dunno.. Sometimes it smacks of over-reverence to always call them by there full names. I love seeing nicknames like "Spidey" "web-head" "shell-head" used because it reminds me of all the fun stories I grew up reading. As JB has expressed his dislike for them, I don't use them here. (It's damn hard not to use Spidey or Cap though, as I've been using those terms since I could read!)
