Alfred would be an older adult (55-60?), about the
same as Perry White and probably ten years older
than Commissioner Gordon.

Remember, when first introduced, Gordon was a
contemporary of Bruce's father. It was DARK
KNIGHT RETURNS and YEAR ONE that gave us the
Gordon who is closer in age to Bruce himself.

never quite understood all the Hawkman hub-bub. Under Geoff's revision/relaunch Carter Hall now carries all of the past lives of all the Hawkmen before him, Thanagarian and Terran. Soooooo what's up with confusing about that?

Nothing -- if you've been reading comics forever. If you're a new reader, tho, you are F.U.C.K.E.D.

(Early warning sign of Fanboy Think -- if your think making a character's background MORE complicated is an IMPROVEMENT.)

But Johns DIDN'T make Hawkman's background more confusing. The current Hawkman is the Golden Age Hawkman, essentially. Only difference: via retcons (most of which precede Johns's writing) he has Thanagarian connections which explain Nth metal, etc.

Darren,

 QUOTE:
Aren't Crazy Jane and Rebis now deceased?

Crazy Jane lost her powers and then had her multiple personalities destroyed.  At last word she was living on Danny the Planet.  Rebis is also still alive, and was last seen planning to explore said planet.  (And for the person who mentioned Dorothy Spinner, John Arcudi bumped her off at the tail end of his DP series.)

Haven't seen the issue yet, but since Rita's been dead for years, Larry Trainor died to form Rebis, Morrison left Cliff without a real brain, the Chief's been decapitated and went off to some fantasy world (and oh yeah, caused the accidents that gave them their powers, manipulated them into almost being killed and murdered a teammate (Tempest), I'm kind of curious how all these versions are supposed to jibe together.  I thought Johns pulled it off with Hawkman, but this?

I'd forgotten that... although I should have remembered that Gordon in Batman: The Animated Series is quite a bit older than Bruce Wayne. Seems Gordon could *almost* have been a father figure for Bruce, but they've moved Alfred into that role over the years (particularly in "origin" stories like BATMAN BEGINS).

I have read comics off and on since the 60s. I have friends who talked about comics when I wasn't reading them. While I like a lot of Geoff Johns's writing, as far as Hawkman's origin goes, he sure as heck confused me.

It seems recently Gordon is like maybe 10-15 years older than Bruce, in some mediums, but then it depends. Isn't he retired now in Batman comics? that owuld make him quite a bit older, unless he was forced out. I forget

James -- the current Hawkman is the one from the 40s, reborn in a new, young body. The Nth metal technology he uses is Thanagarian. That's all you have to know. To the extent that things are confusing, it's because of stories before Johns brought Hawkman back.

Plus, Hawkman's apparently not gonna be a major player in the
new DCU for a while, so it doesn't matter much anyway...

... which sucks, cause I like Hawkman. A lot.

Nothing, not even my 1970s discovery of the work of Neal Adams, has ever quite lifted me out of my seat and bounced me around the room the way that first Silver Age Hawkman in THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD did. The opening page still gives me chills. The art, there and on the rest of the all-too-brief run by Joe Kubert, was some of the Best. Comic. Art. Ever.

If I could some day convince myself I was about half as good as Joe, I think I'd die happy.

Say, don't you own that very page, JB? I thought I remembered you mentioning that.

I own a page from that issue. One that is somewhat more "historically significant", as it is the first to feature Katar and Shayera in uniform and on Earth. But it's not the first page.

I have three pages from Kubert's run. They hang in a group, immediately to my left as I sit here at the computer. Sometimes, when I feel like getting really depressed, I sit and stare up at them.

%#$@% Kubert!!!!!!

Nope. It's insisting they all happened and keeping them all in continuity is what's confusing and offputting.
