I totally agree with you, JB.

I went into the hospital at the age of 30 with diabetes
and was stuck there for a week. I spent part of my
recuperation time reading early issues of Iron Man.
Because of the condition I found myself in, I was
especially struck how heroic this character Stan
created was. Even though he had a life-threatening
condition, he not only refused to feel sorry for
himself, he fixed the situation as best he could and
then continued on to help others. Not only did he
help others, he did so anonymously and by
constantly putting himself at risk for no apparent
reason other than it was the right thing to do.

So, yeah, I agree with you. Great heroic character.
Possibly the most heroic in comics.

My wife and I were talking about thi subject the other day.  Which is weird, because she's not into comics at all.  I submit that Iron Man is a great choice  -- and also ideally-"suited" for a movie treatment.

My wife had never heard of Iron Man, but after I gave her a synopsis of his origin, she all but ordered me to the keyboard to write a screenplay.

And I agree with Matt -- Iron Man's armor from the seventies is my favorite.

It warms my sometimes cold blackened heart to hear such high regard lofted upon my favorite character.  Too bad the people in charge of him at Marvel don't seem to have that same regard.

I always think that the SILVER SURFER gets overlooked in polls like this:

He make an tremendous sacrifice early on by giving up his homeworld and love in order to save the people of earth; as well as having a beautiful, gentle almost "pure" spirit...

At least all that's being done to Iron Man right now is an incredibly late publishing schedule!  With my guy, they've got him eating heads, having an eyeball gouged out, dying, and getting in touch with his "inner spider".

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!  MY KINGDOM FOR ONLY A LATE PUBLISHING SCHEDULE!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Iron Man is a suprising, but amazingly fitting choice, which, shame on me, I woud have never thought of myself.
Now when I do, I see the character in a different light.

Oh, I did, I did -- I was just wondering which DC character you thought
came closest.

I still feel your pain, though, since Spider-Man is my second favorite character, only a thin web behind Iron Man.  There was a time when I would pick up every book Spider-Man starred in.  Now, it's just ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, which is not even the 'real' Spider-Man.

I will say, however, that Iron Man has had a share of cringe-worthy mischaracterizations in the past half-dozen years as well.  With a few small exceptions, pretty much everything since Kurt Busiek and Roger Stern left the last series has been littered with problems.

I think the Surfer is a way cool character, but he's too much of a whiner to make this short list!

Matt, I'd upload a copy that I have saved, but the file is too large.  I tried taking out the DC books, but it's still too big....

Iron Man is intriguing.  I have to admit that while I felt his "can be killed any moment due to ailing heart" weakness was a bit unbelievable, it was a nice heroic characteristic.  I know in various incarnations he has had that issue (and shrapnel) removed, but I always felt his scientific genius and capitalistic weapons manufacturing tendencies kind of overshadowed his heroism.  He seems a little too cool, distant and corporate to be the Best Superhero Ever.   Of course the scales and criteria are all sliding and subjective, but I think my choice would be someone still vulnerable and brave, but somehow more steeped in nobility (for me).  Probably that character for me is The Man Without Fear, Daredevil (before he got so "grim n' gritty" anyway!)  Or maybe Captain America.  Or Batman.  Or....

I've always liked the character, and while the JRJR/Layton period gets a lot of the talk, I'm especially fond of the work that Gene Colan did in Tales of Suspense and the early issues of Iron Man.
