Yeah, I thought it was the Thing too (in an early Lee/Kirby story), but it could have been Hulk as well.

For Jeff: You're right about 7-8 feet being pretty damn big. Hell, at  6'3" you'd probably intimidate me with your stature - I don't need someone to be 10 feet tall for me to think "wouldn't want to be around that person." So, although I may have quantified the ratio wrong with the word slightly, my overall point was that if you have a hugely muscular beast in front of you, it doesn't matter if said best is 7 feet tall or 10 - it is still scary.

Plus, with the Hulk (or the Thing, or whoever) being closer to human height, all the villains and monsters can be bigger and therefore more of a threat.

I don't have the issue here, but I remember The Thing in an FF issue getting off a plane with a smoking engine, and referencing an adventure that just happened in his solo series.  I think it was just before the big battle between the FF (er, F3) and Doom/Tyros/Silver Surfer.

I remember that one, David.  I also remember the Thing sitting in an airplane, jacket pulled around him, hat thrust down, flying somewhere in an early Lee/Kirby issue.  Anyone out there who can help or, better yet, supply a pic?

It took me several views of this thread before I realized what was "wrong" with that Hulk doll.  Geez, that's creepy.

I might be crossing my wires with that old Kirby/Lee FF story...I was definitely thinking back to that vintage though.  I'll need to flip through the first ESSENTIAL HULK...if it ain't in there, then I'm misremembering things...

He's a Marvel character, so some connection to reality is critical.

7 feet tall and 1,000 pounds is pretty darn impressive. The first shot of him by JB is how I think the Hulk should be depicted.

As someone who grew up in the 70's anything other than what was drawn by Sal Buscema just isn't the real Hulk to me. What height was Sal's Hulk about 6'8" to 7' at the most?

Wasn't it in one of the first few issues where Hulk flew on a commercial plane...in coach no less?

****

Issue 5 of the original series. In trenchcoat and hat, the Hulk sits in a regular commercial airliner seat.

The first comic that I remember reading that made me see the Hulk as significantly more massive than a normal human was Hulk annual #7..not that he hadn't been drawn as such before but not so clearly so

Thanks, John.  That's what I was thinking about.  Must have just swapped Thing for Hulk in my mind.
