Ok. DOesn't mean he doesn't like them. Personally, from what he has said over the years, i don't think he reads many of them. I don't think he has kept up with them for the last 30 years or so.
The one time I did sense a bit of reluctance about something was when he was interviewed regarding the Spider-man movie. I sensed he was sorry that the webshooters were organic, though he understood he said from a time and story perspective why mechanical was not done.

I bought and read this issue, with no idea what it was about or what
would happen at the end. I think that at least gives me a right to
critique it.
This is essentially a story about the cannibalism of Spider-Man.
The fact that some current readers, perhaps most of them, think this is
a great development shows how far fandom has travelled up their own
collective a**hole.

I'm so glad the the Spider-Man books aren't being done by creators I follow. I would've hated to have purchased an issue that contained the page that was posted. Jesus.

Half a century ago, the USA produced Sinatras, Dean Martins, Jack Nicholsons, Al Pacinos and Robert De Niros. Now, it produces Christinas, Snoop Doggies, 50 Cents, Pinks and Jessica Albas.
****************************************************
Half a Century ago Pacino and De Niro were teenagers Not exactly the leading actors of that era. Even so Jessica Alba isn't their current day analog. Perhaps Johnny Depp would be.

JB,
I'm not sure I follow why you think it "sucks to be me". I just really hate the idea that Stan Lee endorses (at least in public) all the drivel that MARVEL has been putting out in the last five years or so.
Side note: I knew things were really getting bad when they got rid of the "Stan Lee Presents..." line at the top of each title page. Seems appropriate though, given the content of most of the MARVEL books these days.

Well, I'd hoped to follow Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, because I feel Peter David can give me the first readable Spider-Man book since Busiek's Untold Tales. But, since I have no interest in JMS or Hudlin, nor any interest in only reading 1/3 of a story (especially when that won't include the conclusion), I'll be waiting to pick up FNSM until #5.

Does anyone else feel queasy after seeing that
"injury to the eye" page? "Sins Past" made me stop
reading Amazing Spider-Man after close to 20 years
of reading (and assembling a pretty-much-complete
collection, with Marvel Tales to fill in the
expensive-issue gaps), and stuff like this makes it
seem that they're doing everything possible to drive
away every possiblereader, new and old.
Spider-Man getting dumped on is funny, and in the
spirit of the character. The Daily Bugle picking on
him, citizens of New York hating and fearing him
(well, sometimes they cheer him on--they're a fickle
bunch), problems juggling a social life and saving
the world, selling pictures that make himself look
bad for the sake of keeping a roof over his
head...that's all in good fun. Knocking up Peter
Parker's first serious girlfriend, giving him a fatal
disease and ripping out his eyeball and eating
it...that's sadistic.
I'd like to say that "at least things can't get any worse
for him," but this story's only about halfway finished,
isn't it? Yikes...
***
On a more positive note, I'll back up the
recommendation for Roger Stern & Glenn
Greenberg's "Goblin at the Gate" story. Great
comics, and--shockingly--the Hobgoblin hasn't
shown up since. Amazing that they've shown so
much reverence to that character after Stern fixed
him up in the "Hobgoblin Lives!" comic while letting
any number of insane stories with Spider-Man and
the Green Goblin see print in the past decade.
As an added bonus, the one letter I ever had printed
in a Marvel comic shows up in one of those issues,
too. I got a No-Prize for catching a Brothers
Karamazov reference in J.M. DeMatteis's
Kraven/Chameleon storyline...
--edited to add--
I'll be interested to see how they pull off the title
"Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" with the
character they've got now. It's not kid-friendly, it's not
parent-friendly, it's not long-time-reader-friendly, it's
not new-reader-friendly...where's the friendliness
come into play?

"where's the friendliness
come into play?"
Well, it depends on which neighborhood the title is referring to.
Maybe the one where Hannibal Lector holds his dinner parties.

Reading all this praise for Goblins at the Gate makes me even more angry at
a) Egmont for not printing it in the Finnish Spider-Man title
and
b) Marvel for not having it avalaible in a trade (it's a bit short
alone, but they could throw in Hobgoblin Lives since the old edition is
out of print)

Man, i ended up getting Friendly Neighbourhood Spider Man because i like how Mike's art is faithful to JRjnr's art at around the Roger Stern days, and that's what i was hoping...
So, bam. Right into a f'n Crossover. I mean. Dear lord. No good deed goes unpunished.
Now i'm waiting for it to end so i can enjoy Mike Wieringo's art undisturbed by crap gimmicks.
Btw, he's got a great site \ blog, check it out.

Glenn, I liked your (and Stern's) Hobgoblin/Goblin saga, too.
I loved the Osborn saga... I'd pay gold to see again stories like those into the Spider-books. Instead, we have secret sons, totems and cannibals... Bring back me the real Spider-Man. Please. I don't know if other readers here have a complete collection, they probably can understand how I hate the current storylines and why I don't drop the titles.
