You must do the only thing you can do -- protest with your wallet!

Protest with your wallet and write a letter. Let them know why you are not buying the book-otherwise, there could be any number of reasons. (Ex. After Sins Past, the drop in sales could have been attributed to JR JR leaving)
A more minor character would be a bit different-stopping reading could be a sign to the company there is no interest in the character period.
Still, I'd wait for the cross-over to be over to see exactly what is happening here with the character.

"That's simply inflammatory silliness. "
The subject is indeed inflammatory and silly. However, the critcism is based on what is right there on the pages, nothing else.

I just think calling it a rape is a bit much, even if it is distasteful.
But either way, I can't comment beyond the eye issue since I did not get the next one (yet).
Joe, you should not be up so late!

About the MTV Spider-Man cartoon. I watched every episode of this series, and there are a number of things within this series that MOST LIKELY prompted the warning label that uggests this series is'nt suitable for kids under 13.
1. Alcohol consumption. There were a number of scenes showing Harry drinking alcohol.
2. Language. In addition to words like "hell" and "damn", the words "bitch" and "ass" were thrown around a few ties in this series.
3. Implied sex. There ere at least two very subtlely implied "we had sex last night" scenes within this series. One with Harry and Talon (a villain voiced by rapper Eve) and one with Peter and his new girlfriend India. These scenes consisted of showing the two women exiting either the bathroom or bedrooms of Harry and Peter the next morning and show them fixing and/or adjusting their cloths as if they have just gotten dressed. It has been rumored that there was a hell of lot more strongly implied sexual inuendos within this series, but Marvel asked for it to be toned down.
4. Violence. The violence in this series was a lot more intense then the average TV-Y7 rated action cartoon for kids. The MTV Spider-Man contaied a strongly implied (but off camera) decpitation scene, showed an on camera scene of a guy getting his finger cut off, showed sevred body parts (a finger and an arm) laying on the ground, and showed blood numerous times.

I can't see the use of the word "rape" here. Psychologists and police departments have long understood what most of the public still does not, that rape is not really about sex, but is rather a kind of assault that uses sex as the weapon (in the same way that bludgeoning someone to death with a baseball bat is not about baseball). What happens to Parker in this scene -- unless there is something that has not been posted here -- is assault and battery and, if he dies, murder.

For the sake of comparison, how do you guys rate the KRAVEN'S LAST
HUNT story against the OTHER? I see the many similarities in both,
including some spider mumbo-jumbo.
For my part, at the time, I thought the story was a big "change of pace"
and had a very different tone for Spider-man, but he emerged unscathed
by the end of his six-issue ordeal.
The biggest mistake, of course, was killing off Kraven (is he still dead?),
especially after writing him so out-of-character (he was characterized as
an anguished, suicidal nobleman living in exile from the Soviet
revolution).
Edited to add: you have no idea how I felt to see him back in true form in
CHAPTER ONE and XMHY, my heartfelt thanks JB!!!

Kraven's Last Hunt scared me off Spider-Man for several years. I
imagine The Other will do the same for some kids (at least here in
Finland where comics are easily avalaible in supermarkets and grocery
stores).
While I later started liking parts of KLH, I hate it for killing off
Kraven. He's an excellent character and neither of his sons has been a
very good replacement.

I feel that mistake was partially rectified when Kravens son was introduced.
I always imagine Warner Brothers doing a Fudd's last hunt cartoon. But then I get the giggles.

I always imagine Warner Brothers doing a Fudd's last hunt cartoon.**** They came close! Back in the 40s Bob Clampett did a short that followed Bugs and Elmer into the distant future (like, 1966 or something) replete with Buck Rogers style clothing and "futuristic" archetecture.

"but is rather a kind of assault that uses sex as the weapon"
OK, I can see how I was wrong to equate it as literally rape.
What led me to that impression was the sum of what was portrayed the
third to last page. For example Spider-Man's repeated use of the word
"No" after his eye had been taken. Morlun saying "delicious" after
(presumably) eating the eye, which suggests sadism.
The second to last page is just six panels of Morlun pummeling
Spider-Man. The last page is a detailed splash of him bloodied and
splayed out on the floor. It's probably supposed to be cinematic and
dramatic, but it's also gratuitous. The last image just repeats what
the reader already knows at that point: Spider-Man has been beaten to a
pulp. That's voyeuristic.
