Ripping out eyeballs and evolving Spider-Man into something else is probably intended to stick around a bit longer...
***
If he is evolving, ripping out his eyeball is, in my guess, unlikely to stick around.

While discussing "The Other" storyline with the owner of the LCS, he
said to me "I would like to see a stronger and meaner Spider-man, I
would like to see him elevated to Thor class strength."
After a short pause, all I could say was "Wouldn't they have to change the title to Spider-god then?"
I think this story is devisive among the fans. Time will tell
what the fallout will be, but I just might stop buying a copy of "The
Amazing Spider-man" for the first time since #181. Makes me kind of
sad really.
************************************************************ ***************
2 observations.
Spider-Man shouldn't be as strong as the Hulk/ Thor. The stories are
a lot less interesting then, and I don't see that as the direction the
current creative team's going in.
If you're not enjoying the Spider-Man comics, use your money to buy
something else. I'm certain there's material available that you will
enjoy more.

It's amazing (no pun intended) that one can own a comic shop without ever having read a single Spider-Man story.

Spider-Man should be a street-level crimefighter. His villains are not centuries-year-old vampires -- they are two-bit thugs who got their powers while trying to steal cable (Electro). The Spider-Man who can lift "ten tons" is a mistake, I think (we're talking about 20,000 pounds here). *My* Spider-Man can lift a Volvo on his best day -- this makes him as strong as ten healthy men -- still amazing, in my book.

Nick Turturro said "I bought my first comic when I was 12, and it was What If Wolverine was Lord of the Vampires. In it, many X-Men were bitten/turned by vampires, Dracula and a vampire Kitty Pride were beheaded, Dr. Strange was crushed by the Juggernaut, and the Punisher got two fists of adamantium in the stomach. All pretty violent stuff, and pretty bloody."

It sure was. But we're not talking about "bloody and violent out-of-character What If?" comics. We're talking about "bloody and violent out-of-character Spider-Man" comics.
By the way, you're not that Nick Turturro, are you?

To say that no storylines can be done with supernatural foes I think is a mistake. Obviously he shouldn't normally be fighting them.
As to strength, as Stan said, Spidey was a teenager and his strength was still maturing. At one point, I think only the Hulk, Thor, and the Thing were stronger than him.
10 tons is just a representation-it makes him far, far less powerful than Thor, the THing, Colossus, etc. as he should be,

Powerful enough to defeat Firelord and annoy Jaggernaut, though. Spider-Man was a great character with some of the best stories ever told.
Too bad that the above belong to the past and any hope of returning to his former glory appears terribly thin....

That Spider-Man vs. Firelord story is probably a good dividing line between appropriate and inappropriate concern for continuity. Given the established power level of Galactus' heralds, there's really no way Spider-Man should ever be able to even lay a glove on one of them. But because the story was presented in those terms, that there's no way he can beat him but miraculously he does, I think it's one of those times you just let it go.

I agree with you, Mike. That's the way I saw that story as well.

Iknow it's about Spider-Man. I was just talking about the appropriateness of
that level of violence in what is ostensibly an all-ages book (whic What If..?
was at the time.
And no, I ain't the famous one. :)

Turning Spider-Man or any other mainstream M***** character into
Captain Universe completely misses the point for BOTH characters.
Spider-Man doesn't need to be CU while CU was created to be an
"everyman" character, to explore what an ordinary person on the
street would do if s/he suddenly gained superpowers. The fact
that M***** is starting up a new Captain Universe series by having
various M***** characters turning into CU is not only totally boring,
it further demonstrates that the current administration lacks even the
most basic understanding of their own characters.
