Morlun is the mole!*
*You know, the trash tv show featuring ruined showmen... It's an American format, I think.

Plus, as I mentioned, Mackie/Byrne Spider-Man was at least recognizable as Spider-Man. So, the newest avatar of the Spider-Totem- a member of the Avengers who lives in a fabulous apartment and has an Aunt who dates Jarvis- got his eye ripped out. I'd only be upset over this if it was Spider-Man who got his eye torn out, but we haven't seen him since about 2001, at least.

I think the maiming of Spider-Man is a great idea. Even better would be
him losing the "family jewels". Imagine the endless story possibilities:
Peter: "I'm not half the man I used to be."
Mary-Jane: "Oh Peter, I'll still love you."
Peter: "Do you really mean that, MJ? Could you still love a man who
fights super-villains but can't take care of your ... needs?"
Mary-Jane: "You still have those cute organic web-shooters."
Peter: "Why yeah, I didn't think of ..."
Wolverine: "Hey Red, I'm ridin' out. You coming?"
Mary-Jane: "Be right there, Mr. Logan!"
Peter: "sigh."

That sort of go-getter attitude is going to have you writing M***** titles by the end of the year, Joe.

<<Word of warning: Howard more than once slipped
into the trap of having the stories cross from my book
to JRjr's, so you'll need to pick up those issues, too.>>
Ahem... excuse me, but there was no slippage... editorial
directive at the time... I HATED having stories continue
from one book to the next!
Happy T-Day,
Howard

That did annoy me too. Not a knock at all at JRjr, but having him finish a
story that was started in ASM was too jarring to me, since their artistic styles
are so different.

"Spider-Man losing his eye in battle is A) a shocking moment which will get people talking, B) a reminder that anything can happen in the Marvel Universe (especially important with the big changes DC is planning with Infinite Crisis, C) something that can and should have long-lasting ramifications, D) something that's not going to damage the character, and E) not out of character for Spider-Man or Morlun.
Is it honestly any worse than killing off Mary Jane (or apparantly killing her, and then keeping her out of the books for more than an year)?"
You forgot
F) One more piece of shit writing in an increasingly ugly, joyless, and shrinking market.
The notion that it may not be worse than another piece of shit writing (for example, raping Sue Dibny) doesn't reduce its turdness.
Every time I feel down that I'm not buying many comics these days, I see something like this and I'm glad that I'm not buying many comics these days

Wow! That stuff... is amazing...I don't know what else to
say.
The only thing that jumps to my mind is... it's gotta be
a clone! Aren't they doing some sort of "other"
storyline... hasn't their been Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider
refs on the covers?
Who wrote this? Who was the editor?

"D) something that's not going to damage the character"
Which part of his abilities doesn't rely on depth perception?
Leaping - oops, into that wall. Swinging - oops, into that truck. Shooting - oops, missed that flagpole entirely.
Unless he gets a bionic replacement, they grow a clone eye, it heals, or it's a dream sequence, then they've just destroyed the character.
But hey, it's for a good cause, right? It was a shocking moment in one story. That's worth tossing 40 years for...

Remember - take a lesson from my current avatar, and don't be afraid to tell those no-good-nik fans to shut the fuck up. You're on your way to quality writing!

Its a comic book. Any one of those things or dozens of others will happen and then the character will be "fixed" for you. I promise. In the meantime, it does get people talking about the character, which is what supposed to happen.
