Maybe this is a bad thing to say given the propensity these days to treat comics as a launchpad for movies and nothing else, but as I said to a friend last night, the test should be "Would this be in the movie?" For example, flawed as Raimi's Spider-Man films were, the costume was right, Peter started out living with Aunt May and Uncle Ben and attending high school, he didn't have much money, he worked for the Daily Bugle, etc. In other words, they weren't about the one-eyed Spider-God living in Avengers HQ. I could've done without the organic webshooters, and things like Harry as Peter's high school friend were concious changes from the comics, but ultimately, the character was reasonably recognizable as Spider-Man. JMS's Spider-Man? I have NO idea what that is.

It's pretty clear that M***** now is just a movie company, and nobody gives a sh!t about the comics over there. As long as the sales don't tank no one will get fired. And the best way to stop sales from tanking and maintaining your job as EIC?
. Alternate covers
. Death, maiming, violence
. Tits and ass
. Ultra-Hype
. Spins off, crossovers
. Reboots, renumberings, remakings
So, until either a) Movies go out of fashion b) EIC resigns, we will have to go one treading through this outrageous low quality, lowest common denominator shyte.
Oh well.

You might be right Mig, but then the two leading companies are both doing what you say. So maybe the only hope is Dark Horse? Or, perhaps, Image

Marvel editorial is letting these things happen to their characters.

This, I think, is the key point that needs to be kept in mind here.
Nothing is happening in these books that hasn't been OK'd by the people in charge.

To Gregg Allinson:
I fully agree with your point about "Would this be in the movie?"
I just can't imagine Sam Raimi wanting to do movies featuring an entire lineage of Spider-Men or supernatural, other-dimensional foes or a vampire eating one of Spider-Man's eyes.
When I walked out of the first Spider-Man movie, my reaction was that while I didn't fully embrace the organic webbing, it felt like a real Spider-Man story, it had the heart and soul of Spider-Man and his universe, moreso than pretty much any Spider-Man comic published over the last 15 years.

Yes, Spider-Man has strayed more from his roots and from what makes him unique than Batman did back in the '50s when he was fighting aliens and wearing rainbow costumes. That said, the character was still *fun* if wrong (Batman is not just a modern-day Zorro).
Let's just hope there's a Neal Adams and a Denny O'Neil on the horizon for Mr. Parker.
BTW: What I really dislike about Morlun is that he has many of the same problems as Bane and Doomsday. He's inexplicably the "most dangerous foe" Spider-Man has faced -- sort of like the Mary Sue of villains. A writer can put his creation at the top of the food chain without really backing it up narratively. Morlun is unstoppable. Morlun is unbeatable. Feh.

I think we are about to learn more about Morlun.
and Doomsday was unbeatable because, it was later revealed, that was his power.
and Bane was shown over a long period of time of studying Batman, and then gradually weakening him over a long time. That was completely shown narratively.

It gets better (FNSM #3 SPOILERS) Spider-Man kills Morlun by popping a spider-stinger out of his wrist and stabbing him to death - he's compelled to do this by his 'killer spider instinct' from the spider-totem nonsense, since that's "how it's supposed to be". (END SPOILERS).
Umm....evolve or die!

Jason...
I physically hurt...
Thank you, JMS. And to think I once adored Babylon 5. I guess I still do, but if I ever watch it again, my perceptions of the series are definitely going to be coloured.

Jason -
Your icon is distracting enough, but WHAT is the source of that "sneezing" film?
