I don't have any real philosophical point to make on the matter.  I like Spider-Man, so I hate to see some lame villain beat his ass and rip his eye out.  I liked Xander Harris, and I hated to see some lame ass villain drive his thumb into his eye socket.

I realize these are fictional characters, but It pains me a tiny bit to see this sort of thing anyway.

Jay,

Who is telling JB off? I like BOTD. I own the full run. Bring on the severed limbs and blood geysers. It's classic comic book violence.

I am just saying the Morlun thing is graphic and in poor taste BUT it isn't some new low. In its context, it isn't much different than Luke getting his hand cut off by Darth. Hell, in an issue of Teen Titans from the 80's, Starfire blew a hole completely through Deathstroke's guts with her blast and he laughed it off.

Comic book violence has always been extreme. Have some fun. Spider-man's eye is not retired permenantly. It's just on the injured list.

Would you rather they keep Spider-Man missing an eye?

No, Glenn.  I'd rather see them not do this type of story at all.

I didn't care much for the ending of Star Trek III either.  I think it would have been better overall for the series if they had shown some restraint and not gone ahead with killing Spock in the second film.  These types of shock tactics tend to degrade storylines and characters over time.

I'm not accusing anyone of that.  I was referring to myself.  It was a response to the charge of inconsistency for not levelling the same criticisms at BOTD.  I meant that if  someone wanted my honest opinoin, I think JM has gone too far in BOTD, but I recognize it is a different kind of comic, and JB is our gracious host.

Yes Luke lost his hand, but his story was coming to an end by the third movie.

Spider-Man will go on without end (if all goes "well".) So after this, what next? Aunt May forced to work as a stripper? MJ raped by Doc Ock? Because after Spidey being eaten alive,  everything else is fair game.

526 issues.
I'm only missing eight for a complete run.
The title that brought me back to comics as an adult.
Dropped during the McFarlane and Larsen era.
Came back.
Dropped again with the clone saga.
Came back.
Almost lost me with sins Past, but I'm stubborn.
Eye torn out, I'm gonna see how this plays out and is resolved.
One of my all time favorite characters.
I'm scared that if I drop it again, I won't be back.
I know I'm not the "target audience" but it makes me wonder who is.
This is about as pessimistic as I've ever been for the character.
Damn.

"Just out of curiosity, how many months after? "

Well, here are the easiest available sales figures from the good folks at Comicon.com and  ICV2.com.

9. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
Oct 01 Amazing Spider-Man #36 - 86,456
Oct 02 Amazing Spider-Man #46 - 98,001
Oct 03 Amazing Spider-Man #500 - 148,928
======

Jun 04 Amazing Spider-Man #508 - 82,268 (Last JRjr issue)

Jun 04 Amazing Spider-Man #509 - 88,289 (First issue of Sins of the Past)

Jul 04 Amazing Spider-Man #510 - 84,750

Aug 04 Amazing Spider-Man #511 - 88,118

Sep 04 Amazing Spider-Man #512 - 88,628

Oct 04 Amazing Spider-Man #513 - 89,615
Nov 04 Amazing Spider-Man #514 - 87,121  (Last issue of Sins of the Past)
Dec 04 Amazing Spider-Man #515 - 83,637
Jan 05 Amazing Spider-Man #516 - 79,842
Feb 05 Amazing Spider-Man #517 - 78,584
Mar 05 Amazing Spider-Man #518 - 77,025
Apr 05 Amazing Spider-Man #519 - 79,668
May 05 Amazing Spider-Man #520 - 76,143
Jun 05 Amazing Spider-Man #521 - 74,117
Jul 05 Amazing Spider-Man #522 - 73,130
Aug 05 Amazing Spider-Man #523 - 72,046

Sep 05 Amazing Spider-Man #524 - 71,065
Oct 05 Amazing Spider-Man #525 - 79,520 (Second issue of The Other crossover)

Sorry for the formating of the above.  But those numbers show that sales went up from the end of the JRjr era for Sins of the Past, before starting a steep collapse with the first issue after that wretched storylline was over.  Even with the lag in adjusting orders to the publisher based on sales to consumers, that sure looks to me that readers have fled Amazing not due to a lack of JRjr but because of a bad reaction to Gwen and the Goblin.

"Here's the thing though.

1st Scenario: Kids see comic. They tell mom "Look mom, it's Batman!" Mom says "Ok..." because it's Batman fighting a monster, albeit a demon. That's standard comic-book fare.

Kid reads comic. Villian has face missing. Kid wonders why. Finds out Demon (the titular hero) bit it off. Kid says "Cooooll...."

2nd Scenario: Kids see comic. They tell mom "Look mom, it's Spider-man!" Mom says "Ok..." because it's Spider-man fighting a monster, albeit one who looks like a man.

Kid reads comic. Villian eats Spider-man's eyeball. Kid says "Coooollll....""

There's some validity to what you write, but there are two equally valid counterpoints.

1.  The Demon has an established history of graphic violence unlike what you find in super-hero books.  The Demon series in the 90s had an awful lot of violence you'd never find in Batman or Superman.  Which means, even though Batman is guest starring in that issue, the violence in it isn't out of the norm for the character.  A villian tearing out Spider-Man's eye is a quality of violence that is beyond what is normal for that character.

2.  The kid who says "Cooooll" to the Demon face-biting is at least identifying with the main character (hero?) doing something to a bad guy.  He's saying The Demon is "Cooooll".  In the Spider-Man case, the kid is saying "Cooooll" to the bad guy maiming the hero.  To that kid, Morlun is cool.  I doubt the kid comes away from that issue thinking the character of Spider-Man is cool.
