So, Hackman didn't do any shooting with the new director?

***************

No, in a Swedish interview he clearly stated that Superman IV was his second time in a Superman movie.

Lars,

In my opinion, doing any restoration work on Superman IV would be akin
to pouring perfume on a pile of horse poo-poo.

There's simply too much wrong with that movie to bother trying to fix it.

To Brian Miller:

Gene Hackman did not shoot any scenes for Richard Lester. He did not
even come back to do vocal overdubs. In some sequences in the movie,
Luthor's voice-overs are performed by someone doing a Gene Hackman
impression. And in some shots at the Fortress of Solitude toward the end
of the movie, a body double is standing in for Hackman.

In Donner's 'original' film didn't Superman have his powers taken away by Jor El because he altered time to bring Lois back?

Not sure about the very first scripts, but in the 1977 SII script that Donner had begun filming the reason for the lost of his powers was the same as Lester's version. (Only with Jor-El speaking instead of Lara.)

The things that really made me cringe when watching Superman II are as follows:

The music: Obviously not John Williams or the London Symphony Orchestra. Sounds more like a high school band.

The opening credits: Inferior to the original, which pretty much could be used over again with a few exceptions.

The Metropolis Battle: Too many lame attempts at comedy, and that windstorm was just plain stupid and took too long.

Superman loses his powers: This scene took too long, and it just doesn't look good, by today's or any other standards.

Lois Lane's makeup keeps changing from shot to shot: The disappearing eyeshadow and lipstick.

I don't know what the Donner Edition will be, but I was hoping for CG to fill in the gaps.

And as far as restoring Superman IV, I don't think it would be that bad an idea. I mean, use CG to make better backgrounds and effects, excise the stupidity, replace Nuclear Man with Bizarro . . .

Nah.

It's 2/3 of a symphony orchestra as they obviosly did not want to pay for all the musicians in a symphony orchestra. To me it ist OK, but I don't believe that I have the musical ear that you have, Mr. Carubba It sems like John Williams left when Donner left for some reason, and I have heard rumours that it was so. He then recommended Ken Thorne to them. I have heard that the song at the hotel was not considered beautiful, almost not heard in the movie and it was Thorne's only track that he composed.

Thanks, Glenn for replying about Superman IV. Interseting facts about the body double and voice impersinator.

While restoring Superman IV would be a lost cause, I was hoping for a release of the full Superman IV soundtrack.  Even though it was adapted and conducted by Alexander Courage, the two new themes, "Lacy's Theme" and "Nuclear Man" were original compositions by John Williams for the film.  If you listen closely to the latter theme, you can hear Williams plagarizing himself somewhat as it is an off-shoot of his "Emperor's Theme" from the Star Wars films.

Then Williams plagiarized himself plagiarizing someone else!
