Interesting. Conan looks kinda like he was drawn by Claudio Castellini,
which is not a bad thing.

And, what, no Red Sonja?

Sonja was a Marvel Character, inspired by another howard character.in his story of Red Nails, it is Valeria who is his companion.

Crom!

I used to read Conan novels when I was a tyke.  I know I read both Robert E. Howard books and some novels by hired guns.  Since I think this topic will attract some Conan fans, what are some of the good Conan books to read (not comics) if I were inclined to pick them back up?

There are deluxe hardcover editions of the REH stories coming out from Wandering Star. Beautiful packages, but very expensive.

Dell is producing cheaper, paperback volumes that reprint the material from the Wandering Star editions (though the illustrations are in black and white, not color).

In addition to reprinting the REH stories (minus later "editing" done by his successors), there are also story fragments, outlines, and other miscellanea in the book's appendices.

There are two out so far:  The Coming of Conan and The Bloody Crown of Conan.  A  third, The Conquering Sword of Conan is set to come out November 29.

I don't think that's correct.  I think Sonja IS a REH creation whose trademark somehow fell under different ownership then Conan's.  If Sonja really was a Marvel creation, there is now way Dynamite would be able to publish their own book and release a trade with Marvel content.

Red Sonya of Rogatine  was an REH character from "The Shadow of the Vulture." Which was not a Conan story. It was a story featuring a German Knight named Gottfried von Kalmback.

Roy Thomas wanted a female warrior companion for Conan, but couldn't yet use Belit.  So he turned the red headed Russian Red Sonya into Red Sonja, swordswoman.

This story is related by Roy Thomas in vol 4 of the Dark Horse Conan reprints.

But since Red Sonja was based on an REH creation, the Howard estate kept ownership over Red Sonja. And when it came time to license the character out, she was licensed separately from Conan.

I heard that the photo of Arnold wasn't real. It's his head photoshoped on another body.

REH was a rare writer. His Conan stories are pedal-to-the-metal pulp adventures with a elegant, flowing writing style.
