How was it? Thinking about tracking down the back-issues.

I acquired the entire run off of eBay last year for a little under 40
bucks. It may not be anything spectacular by today's standards,
but it's still a lot of fun for those of us who enjoyed reading Marvel
during its Micronauts-ROM-Shogun Warriors era. There's some great
Herb Trimpe art, not to mention the only chance we'll ever have to see
Godzilla interacting with pretty much the entire Marvel Universe --
from the FF to SHIELD to Devil Dinosaur. I think I'll go dig
those issues out!

It was a good 24-issue run. I started reading at issue 22 and had to pick up all the back issues. I want to get them bound for sentimental reasons and will never give them up.
Would have loved to have seen Hulk appear (well, beyond the gag panel in one of the letters pages).

GODZILLA was the second Marvel book for which I
submitted audition pages, at the editor's request.
The first was CAPTAIN AMERICA.

GODZILLA ruled. Getting Trimpe on that series was inspired. He drew a fantastic Godzilla, especially in action. And it was cool that Dum Dum Dugan was basically heading the SHIELD faction chasing after Gojira. I guess Marvel didn't want Nick Fury to look like a villain and conflict the kids who dug Godzilla AND Fury. Loved the shinking Godzilla stories particularly. I've been wanting to get this series in its entirety. How's the storytelling hold up? It seems I never saw two issues in a row and probably only had three total. Enjoyed them immensely though.

I never particularly liked the way Trimpe drew Godzilla. He gave
Godzilla a huge belly. And he never looked that much like the Godzilla
of the movies (who, admittedly, looked fairly different with each
change of the Godzilla-suit). For one thing, Godzilla is charcoal-gray,
not green.
And I say this as someone who very much liked Trimpe's INCREDIBLE HULK art, at least when he had a sympathetic inker.

Wow, JB on GODZILLA! would have loved to have seen JB's depictions of Red Ronin, the Mega Monsters, and of course all the super-heroes who guest-starred (the Champions, FF, Avengers, etc).
Any sketches or pages still floating about, JB?

Hell Godzilla looked better than the movies. His iguana face gradually deteriorated during the 70s because Toho kept using the same suit over and over until it was being held together with duct tape. By the end of the 70s cycle Gojira looked like he was suffering facial syphllis.
I don't recall Trimpe's Godzilla body offending me. Seems like Godzilla is fairly odd in his construction anyway, with his stubby arms and big fatty legs (in the 70s). I thought the best looking Godzilla to date was GODZILLA 2000. A fun movie, and the design of the suit appealed to me even with the massive spine spikes. I think the spikes help offset that tapered body look. I say this without having seen the bulk of the 90s Godzilla films (which I'm embarrassed about).
For some truly incredible giant monster movies, check out the GAMERA trilogy from the 90s. GAMERA GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE, GAMERA ATTACK OF LEGION, and GAMERA REVENGE OF IRIS. You will not be disappointed. Gamera is the mack.

I love Godzilla and Thor doing the reverse tug-of-war over the office building. The shrunken Godzilla story was nice; I recall it being too long at the time but I bet if I re-read it I would find it was just right.

It's funny. When I posted this I was wondering what a JB
Godzilla would look like? What might have been...
Well, thanks for all the responses, guys. I might try to start
picking up a few of these issues.

I believe Godzilla (along with Doc Savage and MoKF) is one of the licensed properties that M****l is looking to get a one-time license renewal in order to release an Essential collection next year.
