Here's what came out coverdate May, 1970 (the month of my birth, more or less).  There's at least a dozen more non-super-hero books that month, too:

I offer to pick them up... they never tell me what they want... I
ask them every week to give me a list. Oh well.

I had to go out for a minute so I will address things separately.

---------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

"Explain to me how this is easier now than 25 years ago."

It is easier to get a Monthly Comic  Robin, The Demon (JB), Reprints in Trade of Thor, A Comic about a Lesbian Romance than it was 25 years ago.

------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------

2. "There was as much variety (or more) 25 years ago as today."

This is wrong.  You just need to read previews.  There are types of Comics being published now that did not even exist back then.  Just look at the Vertigo line for an example.  I am counting the trades too so that includes many things that were first published 10 years ago or more.  You have to remember you can get a lot of the old stuff in trades.  There were a lot less of those in the past too.

------------------------------------------------------------ -----------------------------

3. "The sales of comics used to be in the millions to even suggest that comics are some how "better" today as an industry is to be a  complete and total moron."

That is a little harsh but we need to determine what better means.

Lets look at two scenarios.  Imagine a time where there is only one comic that sucked but it was given away freely to 100 milion readers.  The artist made minimun wage.

Now suppose later comics cost a dollar but there are 100 different titles they each sold only 1 million but the artist got paid well.

Which era was better.  I would say the second one even though sales per comic were 1/100 of before.

Ever since I can remember the comic book industry has been in crisis. Most people associated with the industry have been cheerfully predicting it's demise, not expecting it to last beyond the next 5 years. Well, these predictions have all one thing in common - they've all been wrong. Is the current crisis any more of a crisis than all the previous ones? I don't think so. Like any industry the comic book industry needs to re-invent itself constantly. It's either change or die, and that's not change as in "let's try and do like in the good ol' days".

2. Each person spends more on comics than they used to.

You say that like it's a good thing.

---------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

How am I saying that like it is a good thing?  I was just trying to figure out how we can have so many comic titles being printed now even though there are few readers.  If they were free it would be better but somehow this industry is being supported.

The covers from 1970 were nice.

I was referring to 1980 which was 25 years ago, and many of those titles wre not published in 1980.

It still better being a comic fan now then 1970 because not only do you get the huge number of comics being published now (which really is a large number)  but you can still by those 1970 comics.  Some of them in nice hardback versions.

There is more doom and gloom now than is being warranted.  I wish our comic titles would sell in the millions but the fact that they do not, does not alter the contents of the comics.  People are making a living (some of them a very good living) and people are enjoying buying them.

I believe Marvel is making more money now than it did in 1980.  I would have to check the facts and adjust for inflation.

I have no problem buying more comics each month. Just give me better stories, better art, and comics that come out on time. Face it. The quality of some of the comics that come out today are pathetic.

Something which you couldn't do. Marvel was a private company in 1980.

Honestly, if you think there's even a small chance that Marvel is making more money publishing comics today than they did in the 80's then there's really not much point in even trying to argue this with you.

Michael, it's not a problem of you or me buying more comics. It's a problem
of getting someone new to buy a comic. The Big Two and other companies
almost entirely dependent on the Diamond setup have done a good job of
bungling that job.

Oh well, maybe comics are like electronics: an industry founded by
American companies but ultimately taken over by the Japanese.

Amazing, Jeff, though Michael couldn't know if Marvel is making more money now than in the 80s because they were a private company then, you do. How do you do it?

Steve, Marvel filed bankruptcy in 1996. Doing so hardly points to the strength of a company, or one that is making more money than in 1980.  Using 1996 as a baseline, and knowing they were nowhere near bankruptcy 16 years earlier, we can see that Marvel is making more money than nine years ago.  Most of that, however, is attributable to merchandising and film deals and not through comic books.

I have to say it is kinda strange that DC and Marvel don't try to
recruit new readers...outside the comic book store. They just
shuffle around the same 200,000-300,000 readers between
their books, don't they?

DC and Marvel could definitely just say "Screw you, Diamond."
I'm not even sure why they see Diamond as beneficial to them.
