As our cousins north of the Forty-Ninth Parallel today celebrate their own version of Independence Day, it seems like an opportunity to remind everyone once again that I am a damn Yankee.

I became a full-fledged American citizen in 1988, almost forty years ago. I have been American for half my life.

I have plenty of fond memories of life in the Great White North, and still have friends there, but I am no longer attached by even partial citizenship.

You're in good company. Canadians still claim "ownership"
of Shatner!

Bill kept his Canadian citizenship. He was slightly confused when I told him that I was Lapsed Canadian.

As if on cue, it's just been announced that Canada will be joining the Eurovision Contest for the first time next year. Because one assumes the Canucks can throw down middling watered down white-boy techno dance numbers just as well as any former Iron Curtain country.

Wow, you may have mentioned that here before, JB, but if
so, I missed it. Did not know that about Shatner!

I've now called Canada my home for more than 20 years, and nearly half my life!

Speaking of the Canadian national anthem, as a teacher who has been subjected to children singing it wrongly for many years, I'd like to clarify that we stand on GUARD, not "God," and that hearts can be GLOWING, but certainly not "gloring." (WTF even is "gloring?")

Back before things got a bit more testy, I used to joke that Canadians were such great allies to the United States that we always start celebrating the 4th of July a few days early.

As a Canadian and devout Byrne-ite (has there been a term coined for JB follower?) I like to still imagine there is some Canadian blood flowing through you but I accept reality and appreciate the shout out nonetheless.
