Sadly, I have never forgotten this or Ken Dodd in Who. I did read more about this phenomenon (the licorice/potassium issue, not crap in 80s Who) and what I read on the Merck website suggested most US licorice is flavoured with fake stuff -- seems the quality stuff is the dangerous vice.
Still going to look for some All Sorts next time I go to the grocery store.

This is terrifying to read, but I am glad you are still here to tell the tale. I am so sorry you had to live with the thought of not having the use of your legs - I dread those chilling, existential realizations. Recovering or surviving those situations can be transformative, though - it reminds us to cherish what we often take for granted.
I love to hike as we have such beautiful trails in Los Angeles. While I know many people have very fulfilling lives without their legs, it would be hard to lose what is both exercise and meditation for me.
So happy to have you still on board, JB!!

Scary the things we take for granted that can suddenly change on us...glad it was resolved for you, John.

Glad to hear everything turned out okay. I will definitely continue my lifelong aversion to licorice.
Out of curiosity, after calling 911, did EMT's come into your house? If so, did they have any reaction? I feel like I would have been too distracted by your life size Robbie the Robot so it's a good thing I'm not an EMT.

The EMTs didn’t actually come into the house.

<< . . . kept coming in every two hours to draw blood . . .>>
As a long-time fan, this immediately brought to mind Dr. Cromwell from Cap. #253-54.
Very glad you're OK, JB!

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a serious medical issue, JB, but am glad that it was resolved and you seem to be doing well again. It's unfortunate about the licorice as well--who knew it could have that effect? Hopefully this has been resolved in time for you to have a happy holiday.

The licorice issue is not something that can be “resolved”, but the nefrologist suggested that since my diabetes is so well managed, I could switch to lemon drops—another childhood favorite.
